Chapter 90: I Hope You Are Alive
Chapter 90: I Hope You Are Alive
As soon as Hu Zhen hears where Chen Jiao left He Wen, she calms down. She releases Chen Jiao, shrinks down from An Ran’s steering wheel, and turns to run into the waste passage.
Seeing the horde of zombies approaching, An Ran notices that the doll in the back seat seems to wake up and begins to cry loudly. In a panic, she starts the car, sticking her head out the window to shout at Hu Zhen’s retreating figure, “What are you doing?”
In the dim passage, Hu Zhen’s thin, fragile back is illuminated by the emergency light on the wall. Though her face is hard to see, the tear stains are evident. Hu Zhen sniffles and says to An Ran, “Go! Take your daughter and find other survivors. Live a happy life. Don’t worry about me; I want to be with my son!”
The baby continues to wail. The zombies get closer to An Ran's car. Several of them gather, making a “ho ho” sound like wild beasts, which attracts even more zombies. Soon, a large group of them blocks the entrance to the parking lot. Can zombies really scream now? Have they evolved again?
An Ran’s eyes widen in surprise as she watches Hu Zhen turn around without hesitation and run into the sewage tunnel. “Sister Zhen! Wait!” she shouts anxiously. Then, she throws a knife out the car window toward Hu Zhen. “Stab their heads! One knife will kill them! Please… take care of yourself! I hope you survive!”
Before her words can fully resonate, Hu Zhen has already turned around, picked up the knife An Ran threw from the window, and her emaciated figure disappears into the darkness of the waste passage. An Ran, who has been watching her, suddenly feels tears welling up in her eyes.
Despite how annoying she has found Hu Zhen at times or how frustrating she is as a teammate, after spending so many days together, feelings have developed. Hu Zhen isn’t a bad person; she is trying her best to cope with the apocalypse. It is a far cry from Chen Jiao, who is sitting next to her!
Sitting in the driver’s seat, An Ran tilts her head and glares at Chen Jiao amidst the baby's cries. She reaches out to push Chen Jiao, but the car door blocks her. Chen Jiao holds tightly onto the back of the chair, crying loudly, and An Ran doesn’t have the time to push her out of the car.
With the situation becoming dire, An Ran has no choice but to step on the accelerator and drive her ex-husband’s car. The front and rear windows close silently, and the black car surges directly toward the zombies ahead.
At the same time, the loud engine attracts many zombies from the dirt passage, brushing past Hu Zhen’s body in pursuit!
An Ran realizes she can’t save Hu Zhen. Reality doesn’t allow her to take the time to kill the zombies one by one; the baby continues to cry. The zombies are evolving, their hearing becoming much more sensitive. The sound of the baby's cries is like a portable speaker, attracting zombies everywhere.
So, she can only lead some zombies away for Hu Zhen and do her best.
An Ran can’t hide in the car and soothe the baby slowly. By the time she finishes, the entire basement will be filled with zombies. She can’t leave the crying baby and Chen Jiao in the car while she goes out to deal with the zombies.
She fears that Chen Jiao might take that opportunity to drive away. If she leaves the baby in the car, Chen Jiao might throw the crying child into the midst of the zombies to get rid of the “portable speaker”—just like she did with He Wen.
