Chapter 649: Yun Tao Came Up Again
Liu Shasha widened her almond-shaped eyes, glancing between Zhao Ru, An Ran, and Little Mint as she warned, “I’m only telling the three of you. Don’t spread this around.”
Zhao Ru smirked. “What’s it got to do with me?”
An Ran shrugged. “I won’t say anything, and Little Mint definitely won’t either. But still, this is something Zhang Boxun needs to deal with himself. You don’t have to get worked up on his behalf.”
Just as she finished speaking, another knock came at the door. The fighting outside had likely quieted down enough for one side to come out on top.
Zhao Ru stood and peered through the peephole while An Ran extended her senses toward the corridor.
The one knocking was the man who had been chasing that woman earlier. He looked badly wounded now. He’d had a few followers before, but during the fighting, those men were killed by the group who’d been kicking down doors. Then he killed those attackers himself—and now he was knocking, probably seeking help.
Zhao Ru didn’t open the door, and An Ran didn’t tell her to. The man knocked for quite a while before the door across the hall opened. The same woman who had been hunted stepped out. Her gait was unsteady, unnatural, and she was holding a knife, her face twisted in pain.
Something about her was off. It felt like something inside her body was about to break loose.
Then, with a flash of her blade and a look of desperate hatred, she stabbed the man who’d been chasing her.
After that, it was the woman’s turn to knock—this time on An Ran’s door.
Zhao Ru looked through the peephole again and saw the woman’s expression distort into something eerie, almost deranged. She looked like someone who had killed too many times—numb, twisted—but even so, her knocking seemed to beg for help.
Zhao Ru turned to An Ran, silently asking what to do.
An Ran shook her head. “Don’t open the door,” she said quietly, sitting at the edge of the bed. “Everyone in the room across from us is already dead.”
The room across the hall was the one that had let that woman in earlier.
When the woman came out to kill, An Ran’s vines had already crept through the ceiling and into that room. What she saw inside was carnage—every man in there had been killed.
The bed was a complete mess. Two of the men lay naked on the floor, pants tossed aside.
There was no need to guess what had happened. Those men had let her in and tried to take advantage of her—and paid the price for it.
Their deaths were no mystery.
“So that woman… she’s Chen Chaofa?” Zhao Ru stared at An Ran, horrified.
Could Chen Chaofa really take on a woman’s form? Or was this all just coincidence—An Ran’s suspicion running too far? Maybe Chen Chaofa couldn’t change his face at all, and everything that had happened was just chaotic happenstance.
An Ran took a deep breath. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up. Turning her head slightly toward Zhao Ru, she said, “Not necessarily. Yun Tao just came up again.”
The first Yun Tao—the one who had gone around knocking on doors, warning everyone to hide and not open up—had disappeared earlier after moving into a spot where her vines couldn’t reach. She didn’t know how he vanished.
She’d been distracted.
Now, the Yun Tao who had been downstairs rescuing children appeared, bringing several kids with him as he rode the elevator straight up to the fifth floor.
An Ran’s mind was spinning as she told Zhao Ru what she saw.
Zhao Ru immediately said, “Then this Yun Tao must be the real one. The one from before was fake. Look—this one’s kind and caring. He even brought all those children up to safety.”
