Chapter 608: Bombing
Chapter 608: Bombing
As soon as the surveillance feed came online, the wolf howls filled the monitoring room. Human voices were drowned out by the sound. On every screen along the walls, wolves swarmed—each about the size of a horse, fanged, and pressing forward toward Yaoyang Base.
“The wolves are coming from the northwest and heading for Hexi.” Chen Chaofa pointed at the drone footage and said to Wu Simiao, “I’m leaving soon anyway. Before I go, I’ll buy you some time—hold them off from the west.”
“How?” Wu Simiao’s face went pale. “How many are there? Even if everyone in Hedong joined forces, we couldn’t stop this many.”
“You’ll see what I can do.”
Chen Chaofa’s eyes flashed with contempt, his expression darker than before. He turned to the soldier behind him, gave a few terse orders, and the soldier nodded and hurried out to relay commands.
Moments later, from the rooftop of the Grand Fortune Hotel in Hedong, several aircraft took off loaded with munitions and flew toward Hexi. They released a shell onto the wolf pack that had already reached the upper Hexi area.
“Goddamn it!!!”
Watching the warplanes scream overhead, Zhan Lian—still checking the situation up on the roof—flung a flying knife in anger and swore loudly. Seeing the distance, he knew his knife couldn’t hit the plane, so he turned and ran toward the community entrance.
The shell had already fallen and exploded among the wolf pack, detonating on the ice. Many snow wolves were blown apart, but the blast also shattered the ice at the northwest corner of the compound and blew up several villas!
Thankfully, the people from those villas, having heard An Ran’s orders, had already gathered in groups and headed toward An Ran’s place; they weren’t at home in their villas at that moment, so they were lucky to escape with their lives.
The ground in Hexi trembled under the force of the blast. People in the ice tunnel screamed and scattered like ants whose nest had been stomped.
Zhan Lian forced his way in through the chaos, pulled a few people free, and shoved them toward the exit, yelling, “Go! Get out! Don’t stay here to die! Run east—toward the Grand Fortune Hotel!”
The plane had come from the Grand Fortune Hotel direction. It wasn’t that Zhan Lian was foolish—the Grand Fortune Hotel side had acted, trying to thin the wolf numbers to the west and keep them from crossing the river.
Some heeded his shout and ran for the exit, but Zhan Lian plunged back into the tunnel. His wife and children were inside; if they died, he would die with them.
On the surveillance wall, someone pointed at the aerial footage and called to Chen Chaofa, “Old Chen—look! Something’s wrong. There are people underground in the area you bombed.”
“I remember now. Isn’t that the group that fled from Hexi?”
“Don’t bomb it—don’t bomb it! There are people down there. Hedong people have been streaming into Hexi lately. There must be at least ten thousand. Old Chen, don’t bomb it.”
“Don’t bomb it?” Chen Chaofa turned to look at the group leaders trying to dissuade him, then pointed at the wall full of mutated snow wolves on the screen. “You want these wolves to surround you?”
