Chapter 609: Better Than My Own Death
Chapter 609: Better Than My Own Death
The captains fell silent. The wolves had come from Hexi—after crossing the river, they were already nearing Hedong. Life in Hedong was miserable enough, yet these same captains had been indulging in pleasure and excess. Now, their revelry had led to this.
A single wolf pack had caught them completely off guard.
Honestly, besides Chen Chaofa’s plan, what other options did they have?
And wasn’t this brutal bombing ordered because Chen Chaofa suspected that Jiang Peng and Tang Siluo were hiding in Hexi?
If Jiang Peng and that wretched Tang Siluo had really fled there, then he would blow them both sky-high. Chen Chaofa hated betrayal more than anything.
The people in Hexi were merely collateral damage.
It had nothing to do with these group leaders.
When no one spoke, Chen Chaofa sneered. “I don’t really care either way. I could clap my hands, get on my plane, and leave. But as for you…” He pointed at the captains one by one.
Before they pitied others, shouldn’t they think about their own survival?
Wu Simiao was the first to speak, wearing a nervous smile. “Old Chen, I support you! The base’s safety depends on you.”
“Yes, yes—Old Chen is braver than any of us.”
“That’s right. We have to rely on Old Chen for this.”
One by one, the captains echoed in agreement. They were terrified—and utterly impressed by Chen Chaofa’s ruthlessness. When Jiang Peng was still around, none of them had realized how dark Chen Chaofa truly was. Now that Jiang Peng was gone, his cruelty showed in full.
There were tens of thousands of people beneath the Hexi ground.
But to these men, the deaths of others were preferable to their own. What did it matter if others died? Help if you could—but if you couldn’t, save yourself first.
Besides, weren’t those Hexi survivors already fleeing? Judging by their direction, they were heading east anyway.
No one dared object again. Chen Chaofa didn’t rescind his order, and the bombing continued.
The ground in Hexi kept shaking violently. Fortunately, Fatty’s people and those who had relocated to Hexi were all moving toward An Ran’s villa. Since it was close to the exit, many managed to escape the ice tunnels and run east.
Chen Chaofa’s planes concentrated their bombardment on the northwest—where the wolves were thickest—while An Ran’s villa was in the southeast.
There weren’t many aircraft in the air, but each carried plenty of shells, and those shells were devastating. They slaughtered countless mutant wolves—but also tore deep craters into the ground.
Some surviving wolves crashed through the shattered ice and burst into the tunnels below, charging madly through the narrow passageways. People were torn apart and devoured alive, leaving not even bones behind.
Those who could still run fled toward the east side of the river.
Above them, the planes kept dropping bombs. Each explosion ripped open more holes in the ice, allowing even more wolves to pour through.
The earth trembled again and again as the shells struck, the shockwaves rolling through the tunnels. Children screamed and sobbed, their cries echoing through the dark, frozen corridors.
