Chapter 606: Mutated Snow Wolf
Chapter 606: Mutated Snow Wolf
Judging from Zhang Boxun’s expression, An Ran thought that this man probably—no, definitely—would never end up with Tang Siluo in this lifetime. Being with her was too exhausting, far beyond what he could endure.
What Zhang Boxun needed now was peace and quiet.
“Who’s there?”
Perhaps An Ran’s movements were too loud. Zhang Boxun, who had been calmly watching the Kongming lanterns, frowned slightly and turned his head toward the sound.
An Ran stepped out from behind the snow-covered hut, her face flushed with embarrassment, holding Doll in her arms and pulling Little Mint along.
She smiled awkwardly and greeted Zhang Boxun and the red-eyed Liu Shasha. “Hi, sorry to bother you. We just came out to enjoy the view—we’ll be leaving right away.”
Zhang Boxun’s handsome face suddenly changed. The faint frown vanished, replaced by a flash of murderous intent that made An Ran’s heart jolt. She blinked, puzzled. Had she interrupted something between him and Liu Shasha? They didn’t seem to be doing anything inappropriate.
Then why was he looking at her like that?
Before she could figure it out, Zhang Boxun shouted, “An Ran, run!”
A chilling wolf’s howl pierced the air.
An Ran’s hair stood on end. Instinct kicked in—she grabbed Little Mint with one hand and held Doll strapped to her waist with the other, bolting toward Zhang Boxun.
Zhang Boxun leapt forward and, with a sharp flick of his wrist, hurled a longsword straight past her. A moment later, something behind her gave an ear-splitting roar as steel met flesh.
The sound that followed was deafening. Even across the vast snowfield, the howl could be faintly heard echoing beyond the eastern river.
An Ran glanced back mid-stride—and froze. It wasn’t some ordinary snow-covered beast. It was an Arctic snow wolf, but mutated—its body the size of a horse, two huge fangs protruding from its mouth.
Its entire form was caked with snow, as if it had been hibernating for ages and had only awakened because of their approach.
Zhang Boxun’s sword had pierced its shoulder, completely enraging it.
The creature reared up beneath the pale moonlight and howled toward the heavens. Far away, several other snow wolves answered the call.
Then it charged.
An Ran tightened her grip on the children and ran as fast as she could, snow crunching under her boots.
Zhang Boxun was already in motion—he swung two chains from his hands, wrapping them around the snow wolf’s massive head and jerking it violently to the side.
“Go! Hurry!” He’d redirected the beast’s rage toward himself.
Liu Shasha, standing nearby, stomped her feet anxiously, unsure how to help.
Then her eyes widened in shock.
An Ran—who she’d always thought was just an ordinary woman—had stopped running. She pulled something from her coat pocket.
A… branch?
The next moment, Liu Shasha was completely stunned.
That small branch in An Ran’s hand suddenly sprouted and grew, stretching and twisting into a long green vine that slithered across the snow.
Zhang Boxun, seemingly familiar with An Ran’s ability, gave a sharp tug on his chain, pulling the snow wolf toward her. The beast lunged forward with a furious roar.
Without hesitation, Zhang Boxun sprinted straight toward An Ran.
Everything happened in seconds—so fast that Liu Shasha felt like she was watching a scene in fast-forward.
The vines burst from the snow, snaking up and wrapping tightly around the mutated snow wolf’s legs.
Zhang Boxun’s sword was still embedded in its left foreleg. Scarlet blood spilled down its snow-white fur, splattering onto the green vines below—only to be instantly absorbed, vanishing as though the ground itself were drinking it in.
