Chapter 478: Still Like
“How did it go?”
Even though she hears Luo Feifan’s announcement, An Ran can tell from Zhan Lian’s expression that dealing with Lei Jiang hasn’t gone smoothly.
They reach the stairwell. In the dim light, Zhan Lian leans against the wall, wraps his arms around her waist, and whispers, “Lei Jiang didn’t show up. Too cowardly. Axe met us instead. He acted polite, handed over the supplies we requested, but said that’s all they have left. Anything more would eat into the soldiers’ rations.”
“What about Tang Siluo? Doesn’t she care?”
“What can Tang Siluo do?” Zhan Lian scoffs, clearly disappointed. “She’s done nothing but cry and scream since her father died.”
He rests his forehead gently against hers and says quietly, “Zhang Boxun agreed to lead the mission to destroy the mutant flower. He knows—if we don’t deal with it, no one’s leaving this city. Once the flower’s gone, he’ll return to oversee the survivors. That’s all settled. You don’t have to worry.”
“I didn’t want to worry about it anyway.” In the dark, her voice is soft.
Zhan Lian tightens his hold on her waist. She waits, knowing what’s coming—his lips brush against hers.
This time, no one interrupts. An Ran feels the kiss last forever, long enough to make her forget they’re divorced, forget the apocalypse, forget the separation of nearly a year.
In that moment, she sighs quietly. She still likes Zhan Lian.
Both she and Zhan Lian share the same unease about Lei Jiang. While it’s true that this community’s soil has been altered by Lei Jiang to resist mutant plants, his existence remains a threat.
He knows full well the grudge between them will never be resolved. Since An Ran and Zhan Lian entered the community, he’s kept himself hidden. No one knows where he is.
Now isn’t the time to sweep the community just to find him.
Across from them, in another building, Tang Siluo slumps sideways on a sofa. Her head rests against the armrest, her tear-streaked face pale. A blue-and-white porcelain jar sits on the coffee table—her father’s ashes.
Lei Jiang enters after tending to the soldiers. Seeing her unmoving, he pours a cup of warm water, sits beside her, and gently holds her shoulders, lifting her up.
“Losing someone hurts, but you need to pull yourself together. Your father left these soldiers for you. If not for yourself, be responsible for them.”
Tang Siluo takes the water he offers, sipping slowly. Her messy hair and hollow expression make her look fragile.
“Lei Jiang… can you help me find Brother Feifan?”
