Chapter 44 No new food found
Chapter 44 No new food found
This is the neonatal department, so naturally, the things found here are related to newborns. The baby carrier is likely used by a parent when bringing their child up, and the items in the backpack are probably intended for the nurse to use for their child.
Anran has gone out several times, but she hasn't found any new food. This gives her a strong sense of insecurity—she feels that staying on the fifth floor is no longer a wise choice.
By now, her postpartum bleeding has completely soaked through her sanitary pad. When she has a moment to check her pants, they are already stained with blood. Whether she has the pad or not, it makes no difference—she might as well let the blood freely stain her pants! Anran decides to remove the sanitary pad altogether, wiping herself down with tissues.
Suddenly, she realizes that her episiotomy wound no longer hurts; she isn’t sure when the pain has disappeared.
Anran grabs another handful of tissues, spreading her legs and bending down to wipe the area where she had the episiotomy. She presses hard—there is no pain at all. It seems like the wound has healed.
Do episiotomy wounds usually heal this fast?
In hindsight, Anran realizes that in the past two or three days, she has been stuck in the neonatal department, running and jumping around, and has completely forgotten about the episiotomy. She hasn't felt any pain down there for quite some time, meaning the wound must have healed long ago.
But can she really heal this quickly?
Just as she is thinking this, a large gush of postpartum blood flows out, hot and sticky against her thigh, running down to her calves. She lets out a groan, grabs a tissue, and wipes the blood from her leg. But postpartum bleeding lasts for many days, and without sanitary pads, her legs are going to keep getting dirty.
In this world, could there be any new mother more bedraggled, filthy, and unlucky than her?
She resigns herself to the situation. Since she is already so dirty, what difference would it make if she gets a little dirtier? Tossing the tissues aside, she lets the blood flow freely.
Then she thinks, since she has plenty of disinfecting wipes, she might as well use some to clean her chest and hands. After all, she is a mother now, feeding and holding a baby, it wouldn’t do for these parts of her body to be too dirty.
After cleaning herself up, Anran finds a set of clean nurse’s clothes and pants to wear. She then returns to the blue light room, where she eats the three large bananas from the fruit basket, waiting for Doll and Chen Jiao's son to wake up hungry.
Soon enough, both children stir, hungry as expected. Before they can start crying, Anran feeds them. Doll receives her breast milk, while Chen Jiao's son drinks the milk made from saline.
After feeding both children, Anran places Doll in the baby carrier and puts Chen Jiao’s son in the backpack. She takes out some of the formula and diapers to make room in the backpack and leaves the zipper slightly open so Chen Jiao’s son can breathe.
The fruit basket now holds the leftover fruit, as well as the big box of chocolates and lollipops she found earlier.
If anyone wonders why her baby is in the baby carrier while poor Chen Jiao’s son is stuck in a backpack, it is because, of course, she prioritizes her own child. The baby carrier is only big enough for one baby, and in these dire circumstances, it is already an act of great mercy that Anran is even taking Chen Jiao’s son out of the neonatal department. There is no way she would put her own daughter in a backpack while treating Chen Jiao’s son like a treasure in the baby carrier.
