Chapter 43 Power
Chapter 43 Power
Anran needs to go to the fourth floor to find Hu Zhen and Chen Jiao. Carrying the two babies, she can reach the security door in the internal passage, but how is she going to deal with all the zombies on the fourth floor? What if, during the fight, Doll or Chen Jiao’s son starts crying? What will she do then?
Should she abandon Doll and Chen Jiao's son, or try to fend off the zombies while carrying both children?
The distance between the floors is usually just a short walk, but in this horror movie-like situation, it feels as difficult as climbing a mountain.
Anran presses her back against the wall, slowly inching toward the baby carrier, one step, two steps. Outside, the sunlight is warm, casting a soft glow throughout the hallway.
Just as Anran blends into the wall like a mural, she freezes. Right in front of her, a zombie shuffles past, brushing against her chest. It isn’t very tall, only about 1.65 meters, just a bit taller than Anran.
Seeing this perfect opportunity, Anran acts without hesitation. She raises the tweezers in her hand and stabs it into the back of the zombie’s head.
The tweezers don’t feel as good in her hand as the fruit knife had. Their slender body is harder to grip, but somehow, Anran manages to muster enough "power" to push it into the zombie's brain. Her hands are sweaty, and when the zombie collapses to the ground, the tweezers slip from her grasp, lodged in the zombie’s skull.
She can’t pull it out!
Seeing the zombie collapse, a few other nearby zombies turn in her direction. However, before they can pinpoint her location, they resume their aimless wandering.
Anran exhales slowly, her palms still sweaty. She takes out her dull fruit knife and slices through the zombie’s throat, decapitating it entirely. From the gaping hole in the zombie’s neck, she picks out the small crystal lodged in its brain tissue and continues toward the baby carrier and backpack.
Along the way, whenever she spots a good opening, she uses the blunt fruit knife to stab nearby zombies in the forehead. As she grows more practiced, her confidence increases as well. By the time she reaches the baby carrier and grabs the heavy backpack, the zombies no longer seem as terrifying. With her fruit knife, and a little patience and precision, Anran finds she can stab through zombie skulls as easily as cutting into watermelons, taking them down one by one.
She isn’t sure if her strength has increased, or if zombie skulls are just softer than human ones. Probably the latter—after all, every species has its own weaknesses.
Holding the baby carrier and the large backpack, Anran turns and heads back into the internal passage. She circles around to the back door of the operating room and returns to the break room inside the passage. She hasn’t been gone for more than an hour, so Doll and Chen Jiao’s son are still asleep.
Anran sits down on the bed and examines the baby carrier. It is brand new and has never been used, looking quite high-end. She guesses it probably costs several thousand yuan at a maternity store. Doll will be snug and secure inside, and the carrier even has a safety belt to prevent shaking, with an option to install it in a car.
Next, she opens the bulging backpack, which is packed with milk powder, diapers, and baby clothes.
