Chapter 42: Numerous Challenges
Chapter 42: Numerous Challenges
It is truly difficult.
First, she has to save the child, but after that, she has nothing to eat or drink, and now even the knife in her hand has become dull.
Anran stands in the NICU, staring at the nearly useless fruit knife in her hand. She sighs, lowering her head. Without the knife, is she supposed to tear apart zombies with her bare hands? This isn’t some anti-Japanese war drama.
Despite the fruit knife being on the verge of breaking, Anran is reluctant to throw it away. After all, it's still a knife!
She carefully puts the knife back in her pocket and walks through the NICU, heading to the front door. There, she conducts a brief search.
The reason she managed to enter the blue light room earlier is that the sliding door isn’t fully locked and can be pushed open from the outside. Of course, there is a switch inside that allows the door to open easily as well. The same kind of switch exists in the NICU.
After feeding both Doll and Chen Jiao’s son, Anran times her return perfectly. She quickly goes back to the operating room, grabs a pair of tweezers she found earlier, and then returns to the NICU. With the heavy door now unlocked, she holds the tweezers in her right hand and the dulled fruit knife in her left, quietly waiting in a corner.
She originally thinks of searching for the operating room to get a surgical knife as a weapon. After all, a surgical knife is far more reliable in quality compared to a fruit knife. But it turns out that all the operating rooms in this hospital are located on the top floor. Even for a C-section, the mothers have to be pushed from the third floor up to the top-floor operating room.
As for the neonatal department? Aside from common medical tools like tweezers and scissors, the sharpest object Anran can find is probably a needle from the NICU—and it is the smallest, thinnest type of needle!
So, if she wants a surgical knife, she has to deal with all the zombies on the top floor. But considering she can barely manage leaving the fifth floor right now, that seems out of reach.
Medical scissors are certainly a good weapon, but after killing enough zombies, any weapon eventually wears out. Weapons have become a consumable resource for her. She figures she should conserve them as much as possible. Since she has the tweezers, she decides to give them a try. As for the needles, she jokingly thinks about mastering the martial arts technique from the novel Little Li Flying Dagger. If she trains for a decade or two, maybe by the time she is seventy or eighty, she can throw needles to kill zombies.
The tweezers seem to be of higher quality than the fruit knife. They are medical-grade tweezers, made from precision steel, with sharp tips. They can definitely be used as a weapon. The fruit knife? It only costs a few bucks and isn’t even as valuable as the tweezers.
Anran’s fruit knife is already dull, and if she continues using it, it will soon be completely useless. She decides to save it for a critical moment, as a last resort.
The NICU is located at the far end of the hallway on the fifth floor, opposite the blue light room. When the door opens, it makes only a faint sound, drawing the attention of several nearby zombies. But before they can enter, they lose their target as the sound fades and quickly disperse.
Anran breathes a sigh of relief. She slowly walks out of the NICU and stands at the end of the hallway, scanning her surroundings. Her eyes lock onto a baby carrier and a large backpack next to a few zombies. She quietly begins to move toward them.
