Chapter 31 Baby
Chapter 31 Baby
Feeling as if she has received divine assistance, Anran sits in a dark corner holding her daughter. She lifts her shirt, grabs a sterile cloth from the blue light incubator on the ground, and wipes the sweat from her chest before feeding her daughter.
Her engorged breasts, as hard as stones, slowly relax under her daughter’s vigorous sucking. Anran suddenly experiences a profound sense of satisfaction. Is this the magical feeling of breastfeeding that people talk about?
“Good girl, Mommy hasn’t given you a name yet. What should we name you?””
Anran sniffles as she feeds her daughter and finds herself crying again. Her daughter is alive, which is beyond wonderful, but she is still worried about their future—how will they survive and get out of this hospital?
This question troubles Anran greatly, but she can’t think of much right now and can only take things step by step. Sitting in the darkness with her daughter isn’t so bad; at least they are together.
“Mommy doesn’t know what to name you. I’m not good at naming. Let’s start with a nickname. How about ‘Doll’? Good Doll~~ Doll!!! When Daddy comes to rescue us, he’ll give you a nice name, okay? Doll, will Daddy come to save us?”
Doll doesn’t respond; she is less than a day old and understands nothing but feeding. She seems ravenous, focusing solely on sucking. After a couple of minutes, she rests briefly before resuming.
In this way, the continuous feeding soon empties one of Anran’s breasts. She has just begun to produce milk, so there isn’t much left in that breast, and Doll cries again when she can’t suck anymore.
Anran sits on the floor amidst her daughter’s cries, and her pain gradually resurfaces. She lifts her hand to wipe the bite marks on her neck and realizes that she has been bitten by a zombie again. By the time she feels the pain, the bites have already scabbed over.
Since they are scabbed, there shouldn’t be much risk to her life. Anran yawns suddenly, feeling tired. She switches Doll to the other breast to continue feeding. As Doll becomes tired from sucking, she falls asleep while nursing.
Anran rubs her deflated breast, and in the faint blue light, she kisses Doll’s sleeping face. The baby’s eyes are still covered with a black cloth to protect them from the blue light. Even though Anran can’t see Doll’s full face, her heart is filled with a deep, soft satisfaction.
Chen Jiao’s son is still crying intermittently, and his cries seem to be weakening. Both children have hoarse voices, which sound pitiful.
Anran feels a little better and thinks that even though Chen Jiao is annoying, the child is innocent. She carries Doll to Chen Jiao’s son’s blue light incubator. Looking around, she sees a blue light lamp on the wall with a long shelf underneath. The shelf holds several bottles of prepared milk and a milk warmer. A bottle of milk is currently in the warmer.
She approaches, picks up the bottle from the warmer, and, holding Doll, unscrews the nipple to check the milk. It seems fresh and has been kept warm by the milk warmer, making it just right for the baby.
