Chapter 29: The Only Two
Sometimes, when a person faces life and death, their emotions become very direct. Indeed, Anran admits that she is terrified. She no longer wants to be strong on her own; she just wants her ex-husband to come and save her.
However, after crying for a while, Anran finds that the zombie bite marks on her shoulder don’t hurt as much. She looks sideways through her tears and sees that the small bloodstains have already scabbed over. Has it really healed so quickly, or has a lot of time passed?
Time doesn’t allow Anran to ponder slowly or consider whether she needs a vaccine. Outside the partially opened sliding door, a zombie has already squeezed in.
Anran quickly picks up the knife from the floor and goes to deal with the new zombie, slicing it down to the ground, right on top of the first zombie.
She kills several more zombies in quick succession, which finally gives her a moment’s respite. The immediate danger makes her feel that the bite marks are no longer painful.
When the pain has completely subsided, Anran silently bends down to pick up the diamonds mixed with brain matter on the floor and then turns, holding her knife, to enter the blue light room.
Inside the blue light room, there are five zombies, all dressed in doctor or nurse uniforms. In the dark room, they are gathered around a couple of blue light incubators, eagerly trying to find a way to get to the babies inside. Because of the babies’ cries, the zombies don’t notice Anran entering the room.
There are several adult and baby skeletons lying on the floor, already turned into skeletons. It seems that the doctors, nurses, and babies who haven’t turned into zombies have been consumed by the zombies.
The entire blue light room is in disarray. Some blue light incubators have been pushed aside, indicating that a struggle has occurred here. It is likely that non-zombie medical staff fought against the zombies.
They might have tried their best to protect some of the babies; otherwise, why would there still be two babies alive and crying in the blue light room?
Anran wants to slap herself. Why couldn’t she have become stronger earlier? She might have been able to find a way into the blue light room sooner, and the babies might not have been eaten.
Suddenly, Anran’s heart feels as though it is dead. She walks silently past the blue light incubators, looking at the babies inside who make no sounds. All these babies have grown fangs and are lying weakly in the incubators, unable to get any food, waiting to die.
No, these babies are already dead!
The only two blue light incubators with crying sounds have very weak cries. If they aren’t fed soon, these two babies will likely die as well.
Anran’s heart aches profoundly. Some things she dares not think about because they are nightmarish beyond redemption. She grips the fruit knife tightly, stands behind a zombie, and raises the knife to stab into its head.
Another zombie nearby, oblivious to what is happening, keeps hitting the blue light incubator in front of it, trying to open it to get to the baby inside but failing. Anran continues to kill and eliminates the three zombies surrounding the incubator.
The baby inside is still crying. Anran reaches through the round opening in the blue light incubator, grabs the small wrist of the baby, and, under the blue light, sees the bracelet on the baby’s wrist. It isn’t her name; it is Chen Jiao’s name. This is Chen Jiao’s son!
