The route Yun Tao chooses is remote. He drives straight into a glass-fronted cake shop, crashing through the back door and out the front in one swift motion. From there, he zigzags from street to street, constantly shifting direction.
Though zombies roam the streets, the density here isn’t as overwhelming as in the previous area. Without hesitation, Yun Tao plows through the scattered undead, releasing an olfactory zombie as a distraction. After a sharp turn, he rams through a wooden door, bursts out the other side, and speeds onto the third street, finally breaking free from the sea of zombies.
Most of the undead have already been drawn toward the copper-skinned, iron-boned zombie, and those lingering in the nearby blocks continue to swarm the mall. By the time Yun Tao crosses several streets, the SUV’s front is badly dented, white smoke rising from under the hood. But he doesn’t stop—he’s carrying a car full of women and children, and the only goal is escape.
The suburbs have fewer people, which means fewer zombies. If they’re lucky, they might find a safe place to stay.
At every fork in the road, Yun Tao instinctively takes the path with fewer zombies, using the olfactory zombies in diapers as bait to lure the undead away. After driving for about an hour, they spot a JEEP off-road vehicle abandoned by the roadside.
Everyone gets out to clear the surrounding zombies, transferring supplies, car seats, and passengers from the damaged SUV to the JEEP. Leaving the battered SUV behind, they set off again.
By the early hours of the morning, they reach the western outskirts of Xiangcheng, finally shaking off the large zombie horde.
Had the zombies not already locked onto another group of survivors as their primary target, Anran and the others might never have escaped the city so smoothly.
Now in the suburbs, they find a decent-looking motel and decide to take a break. Just a street or two away, a massive zombie horde is still besieging a park. The survivors inside are unwittingly drawing the undead’s attention, keeping them off Anran and Yun Tao’s trail.
Meanwhile, Zhan Lian remains entangled in the zombie tide. The rings surrounding him spin fiercely, slicing through the undead as he fights off wave after wave. He has almost single-handedly wiped out the zombies swarming the mall.
Finally spotting an opening, he seizes the chance to escape. With no intention of wasting more time fighting, he bolts, leaping into his bulletproof car. He floors the gas, running over corpses as he speeds off in pursuit of his wife.
However, the olfactory zombies with their diaper helmets have skewed the undead’s movement patterns, causing the horde to shift in an unpredictable direction. Because of this, Zhan Lian loses track of the exact route Anran has taken.
Not long after he drives away from the mall, several vehicles arrive from the opposite direction.
By then, Zhan Lian has already cleared out a portion of the zombies, causing some of them to chase after him while others turn their attention toward the newly arrived cars. Strangely, some zombies vanish without a trace.
Inside the lead vehicle, Lei Jiang sits in the passenger seat, his expression dark with frustration.
Zeng Fan, who is driving, keeps stealing nervous glances at Lei Jiang’s face, not daring to speak.
Lei Jiang has led a group of twenty power-type ability users out of the park in search of the rumored "mobile granary." Many, including Lei Jiang himself, initially doubted Zeng Fan’s claims.
After all, in the harsh reality of the apocalypse, most people who awaken abilities have only developed some form of enhanced physical strength. Power-based abilities are nothing special. Even many so-called “useless” women have awakened it.
