Chapter 234: The Temptation of the Mobile Granary
Chapter 234: The Temptation of the Mobile Granary
No one has ever seen a person capable of producing food or fruit. Among all those with special abilities, the only one who stands out is Lei Jiang.
Lei Jiang possesses the power to manipulate the land itself. The trench outside the park has been created by him alone in just a few days. So when Zeng Fan claims he has seen a woman who can produce fruit, is that even possible?
No one has witnessed such a thing before, so skepticism surrounds Zeng Fan’s words.
Even so, the lure of a “mobile granary” is too strong to ignore. It is enough to convince Lei Jiang to lead a team out in search of this mysterious woman.
In the first few days, Lei Jiang suspects that a high-level zombie inside the mall is summoning its kind, which explains the massive zombie presence. This makes it relatively easy for his team to skirt the edges of the horde, but breaking through is another matter. Too many zombies are constantly swarming toward the mall.
Not only does Lei Jiang’s group have to fend for themselves, but they also have to handle the zombies their own movements attract. As a result, their progress is painfully slow.
Eventually, they assume that the high-level zombie has died. Without its command, the zombies around the mall seem to move more erratically, no longer gathering with the same purpose. Even so, Lei Jiang and his team find themselves stuck on a street beside the mall. The number of zombies they face increases daily, and their chances of pushing forward look bleak.
The only reason they manage to break through this time is because Zhan Lian has drawn most of the zombies’ attention. With the undead distracted, Lei Jiang and his team seize the opportunity to fight their way into the plaza outside the mall.
However, the zombies are still thick in the square. Any movement gradually attracts more of them. But for Lei Jiang, who can dig trenches at will, this isn’t an issue. He carves out a deep pit in the ground, luring zombies into it before covering them with soil. In this way, he single-handedly disposes of a large number of undead.
Yet Lei Jiang’s power, like Anran’s before, comes at a heavy cost. Using it drains him severely. If he overexerts himself, the exhaustion is so overwhelming that living might feel worse than death.
So far, he hasn’t found a reliable way to replenish his energy besides eating. Of course, he has considered the crystal cores in the zombies’ brains. They look like beautiful diamonds, but he has no idea how to use them. For now, he simply collects them, planning to figure it out later.
As they near the mall, Lei Jiang uses his ability once more. He reshapes the terrain of the square, forming a V-shaped double slope. Instantly, the zombies inside the mall slide down to the lower end of the slope. Then, he buries them beneath layers of earth.
With the path clear, he commands Zeng Fan to drive forward. Their vehicle rolls over the smooth, corpse-free ground and crashes straight through the mall’s entrance.
The heavy-duty vehicle comes to a stop inside the main hall—where skeletal remains litter the floor.
“Captain… this…”
Zeng Fan, still sitting in the driver’s seat of the first vehicle, turns his head toward Lei Jiang.
Lei Jiang has just expended a massive amount of energy. His face looks pale, his breath uneven. Ignoring Zeng Fan’s words, he tears open a pack of instant noodles. Without bothering to boil water, he stuffs the dry noodles into his mouth and chews.
He raises a hand, signaling Zeng Fan to stay silent.
Behind them, the other vehicles roll to a stop. Some team members step out, surveying their surroundings. Their eyes widen in shock at the sea of bones on the floor.
A few of them glance toward Lei Jiang through the car window. He continues munching on his dry instant noodles, his gaze fixed on the skeletal remains.
No one can tell what he is thinking.
