Chapter 151: We Can't Stay in This Community Anymore
"Yes, it's a rat, a big one. Its eyes are still red, and its teeth are sharp. So many, so many of them!" Another survivor, a man, keeps repeating incoherent words, describing the overwhelming number of rats. No one knows just how many there are, but their fear is palpable. They had already been terrified by zombies, and now rats add to their horror. It's clear their mental state starts to crack under the pressure.
Anran and Liu Yuan both turn to look at Yun Tao. He sighs and goes into the security room, dropping the fire extinguisher on the floor before heading into the monitoring room. Anran and Liu Yuan quickly follow, carrying their child.
They find Yun Tao adjusting the controls at the monitoring console. He presses a few keys, and the screen shifts to show the area around the garbage dump.
The surveillance feed is a little blurry, making it hard to see whether rats are crawling over the zombie corpses that have piled up into a small mountain. However, what’s clear are the pair of glowing red eyes that flicker like gems in the golden sunlight. The sight is haunting, and Anran feels an involuntary shudder run through her body. She is terrified by what she sees.
Rats and cockroaches are some of the species that most women fear in this world. Anran isn’t just disgusted by how fast they move, but also by their rapid reproduction rate, which makes her feel a sense of dread deep in her bones.
"Rats ate zombie meat and mutated," Yun Tao mutters to himself, coming to the same conclusion as Anran. He purses his lips and shakes his head, a deep sigh escaping him.
In the apocalypse, zombies are rampant, making survival a challenge. Now, these rats have fed on zombie flesh, mutated, and started attacking humans. It almost feels like the world is conspiring against humanity.
"What should we do now?" Liu Yuan, holding Hengheng in her arms, asks shakily as she stares at the rats crawling all over the zombie corpses. After a while, the rats gnaw a zombie down to just a white skeleton. The speed is unnerving. The numbers are overwhelming. And with the rats mutating, it’s no surprise they begin attacking humans. Before the end of the world, rats reproduce quickly, and now that they’ve mutated, their reproductive abilities must have increased exponentially. The sight of the rat mountain is terrifying.
"We can’t stay in this community anymore." Yun Tao frowns as he manipulates the surveillance controls a bit more, then turns back to Anran and Liu Yuan. "Pack up. We're leaving."
"Where will we go?" Liu Yuan, pale and clutching Hengheng tightly, looks at Yun Tao as if he were the head of their group, her eyes filled with a glimmer of hope. "Can’t we find a way to kill the rats?"
"Kill them all?" Anran tilts her head to look at Liu Yuan. "You want to kill all the rats in the garbage dump, and the ones in the pipes, vents, and sewers? They can crawl into any space you can imagine. Sister Yuan, I’m leaving. I can't risk my child being gnawed by rats that suddenly climb up the building while we’re sleeping, leaving nothing but skeletons."
It’s clear Liu Yuan doesn’t want to leave the community and face the dangers of the outside world. Staying inside the community feels safer, free from the wind, rain, and sun. But the situation has grown far more dangerous than anyone had anticipated.
