Chapter 150: What to Do Now
Chapter 150: What to Do Now
Before Anran can ask, Liu Yuan immediately starts explaining what happened. The rats in the security room were crushed to death under Yun Tao's feet. The man who was burned alive had brought the rats in with him, and they scattered everywhere. Some of the smaller, more timid ones ran into the greenbelt and disappeared into the bushes. No one knows where they went.
However, two larger rats charged toward Hengheng like spirits. Yun Tao crushed them before they could reach him.
The fire was Yun Tao’s doing. He had noticed that, despite their size, the rats were fast and agile. The only reason they hadn’t spread further inside the security room was that they were too busy gnawing on the flesh of the man they had attacked. Acting quickly, Yun Tao grabbed a bucket of cooking oil from the table, poured it over the man, and set him on fire. Both the man and the rats were burned to death outside the security room.
After listening to Liu Yuan's explanation, Anran stands up, her heart heavy. Holding the two crystal cores taken from the dead rats, she walks out of the security room.
The survivor who had been covered in rats is now sprayed with white powder from the fire extinguisher, but it does nothing to hide the countless bite marks covering his body. His corpse is stiff, his face twisted in death, still clutching onto the rats that had attacked him. Several dead rats remain attached to his body, their teeth sunk deep into his flesh. Even as the fire consumed them, they never let go. In the end, the fire extinguisher only suffocated them.
A wave of nausea rises in Anran’s throat. Standing at the door of the security room, she watches as Yun Tao returns, then asks:
“What’s the connection between these rats and zombies? I found crystal cores in their bodies, just like the ones in zombies.”
“These rats... they eat people,” Xiao Mei’s husband mutters. He sits on the floor, his face pale with fear. It’s clear that the missing survivor is never coming back.
Anran ignores him. She focuses on Yun Tao, wanting to know what to do next.
To be honest, a deep sense of fear churns within her, but as someone who has killed zombies before, she remains far calmer than Xiao Mei’s husband or Liu Yuan. She has escaped from a terrifying zombie horde in the hospital—what could possibly scare her after that?
Yun Tao doesn’t answer, but the solemn expression on his face is enough to tell everyone present that this situation is even worse than having the community surrounded by zombies.
After all, zombies can be kept out with the gates. But rats? Rats can be anywhere. Hidden in the dense bushes, there could be entire nests of them, waiting to become something far more dangerous.
But how could there be so many rats in this high-end community? Even if a few existed, how did they evolve to the point of attacking humans?
Rats usually run away when they see people, right? There are very few that would actively attack, aren’t there?
Anran is puzzled. But then she thinks again—these survivors came from the garbage dump, which is filled with zombie corpses. In this heat, the stench of decay would definitely attract rats.
Zombies have crystal cores in their bodies. These rats fed on zombie flesh. Now, they have crystal cores growing inside them.
It makes sense.
Logically, they could evolve to the point of actively attacking humans.
