Chapter 136: Burden
Chapter 136: Burden
Before Anran can explain Xiao Mei’s strange behavior, Yun Tao sets Hengheng aside and walks into the monitoring room, his face serious. He presses a button on the console, bringing up the furthest surveillance outside the community, his expression turning angry.
He exits the room and glances at Anran, asking, "Is that He Meimei attracting zombies?"
"Ah? Is she attracting zombies?" Anran is confused by Yun Tao’s question. She shakes her head. "I... I just saw her riding a bicycle. I thought she was running for her life."
"Okay, take care of the child. Go back directly and don’t get separated!" Yun Tao’s tone is firm, and his patience is wearing thin. He turns to leave, seemingly irritated by Anran’s confusion. In his mind, at this critical moment, women either do harm or do nothing at all—leaving them with the single task of caring for children.
The remaining five survivors have nothing to offer either. They are now retreating to their own homes, while He Meimei is out there attracting zombies. Yun Tao is clearly frustrated, but Anran, who is being treated like a burden, can’t help but feel a little aggrieved. She isn’t strong right now, and although she acknowledges that Yun Tao’s words are direct, she can’t help but feel diminished. A burden is a burden, after all, and others are free to dislike it.
When Yun Tao walks out with a knife in hand, Liu Yuan comes over and pulls Anran, who is lost in thought. "Let’s go back. Brother Tao will take care of it."
"Are we just going back and waiting?" Anran asks, turning to look at Liu Yuan.
Liu Yuan pauses, her expression faltering for a moment. She nods, then picks up Hengheng. "Let’s go. We really can’t do anything."
No, they can do a lot of things. Anran frowns, silently refuting Liu Yuan’s words in her mind. She has killed zombies at the hospital, and she and Liu Yuan have even teamed up to take out two people in this community. So why do they become so helpless when Yun Tao is around?
Had they really turned into burdens, expected only to stand behind Yun Tao?
Is a woman’s value only to warm the bed and take care of children?
Yun Tao is strong, but what if Yun Tao alone can’t handle all the zombies?
Anran’s thoughts begin to spiral. She holds Doll and follows Liu Yuan, who is carrying Hengheng, back toward their building. The sounds of zombies shouting from outside the community gate are already reaching her ears.
She and Liu Yuan live in Building No. 1, located to the right of the community entrance. If the zombies breach the gate, the first place they will occupy will be downstairs in Building No. 1.
Anran glances at Liu Yuan’s back, then stops at the gate without entering the building.
Liu Yuan, holding Hengheng’s hand, turns to look at Anran. "What are you doing? Come inside."
Anran waves her hand and pushes Liu Yuan gently toward the corridor. "Sister Yuan, take Hengheng in first. I’ll just stand here and take a look."
Liu Yuan frowns, looking at Anran with disapproval. "There are zombies everywhere outside. What’s there to see?"
Anran smiles at her reassuringly. "I’ll just take a quick look. It’s fine. Yun Tao is so powerful. He can handle it. He won’t let you or Hengheng be in danger."
And she means it. Yun Tao is the only one outside. The so-called five survivors probably have no idea about the zombies surrounding the community. Yun Tao is out there fighting them off alone. How could he not be strong enough to protect them all?
