Chapter 137: Run Away
Chapter 137: Run Away
Liu Yuan thinks for a moment, lowers her gaze in silence, and clenches Hengheng’s small hand. She turns and enters the elevator, taking Hengheng with her. Anran watches the elevator doors close and sneers softly, a trace of sadness on her expression.
Regardless of who is right or wrong, or who is good or bad, everyone just wants to live well. Anran has seen how close Liu Yuan and Yun Tao have become in the past two days. In reality, it is just an act—a way to seek protection.
No matter how hard she tries to ignore it before, she now realizes the truth: Liu Yuan and Yun Tao are simply playing their parts, treating each other like family. It had all been an act from the start.
After Liu Yuan leaves, the numbers on the elevator steadily climb. Anran loosens the sling a little, holding Doll in her arms as she sits on the roadside steps to feed him. The sound of zombies' cries from outside echoes in her ears, but her heart remains eerily calm.
Twenty minutes later, Doll finishes feeding and falls asleep, his eyes closed while nestled against Anran’s chest. Anran takes a pacifier from her pants pocket, carefully removes Doll from her chest, places the pacifier in his mouth, and tightly secures the sling again.
She waits for a moment, but soon the door bursts open, and Yun Tao rushes in, covered in black blood and broken bones. Several zombies follow close behind, rushing in through the door. Yun Tao fights them off as he retreats, then hits the button to close the door, turning just in time to see Anran standing nearby, holding Doll.
"What are you doing? Run quickly!" Yun Tao yells, urgency in his voice.
Despite the chaos, Anran doesn’t run. Instead, she walks toward the nearest zombie. Doll is securely wrapped in the sling, and as she moves quickly, one hand lifts her shirt, while the other draws the saber from her waist. With a swift motion, she slashes the zombie's neck.
The blade, sharp enough to cut through iron like mud, cleaves through the zombie’s neck. With a little more force, she could have decapitated it completely. Without hesitation, Anran takes a few more steps toward Yun Tao and easily stabs another zombie’s head with her knife.
She quickly assesses the situation at the gate. Most of the zombies surround Yun Tao, but a few are making their way toward Anran. The electric gate has been shut, but some zombies are caught in the gap, their grotesque "ho ho" sounds filling the air.
Yun Tao, using fists and kicks, clears a path. Anran, picking off the smaller, less dangerous zombies, keeps moving. If it becomes too dangerous, she will retreat, shaking off the zombies behind her and turning to strike again.
Together, they prevent more zombies from entering the community. Yun Tao has already killed most of the zombies that have surrounded him, while Anran has taken down three or four of her own.
She glances at Yun Tao before he rushes toward the gate, focusing on the zombies trapped in the door’s gap. With that, Anran squats down and begins searching the bodies of the zombies.
Most of what she finds are mobile phones, cigarettes, and banknotes. Occasionally, there are a few pieces of candy, but they hold little value in this world.
The most valuable find, however, is a Swiss knife. Maybe it is a sign that Anran’s mindset has shifted—she no longer cares about the banknotes. She is more thrilled by the weapons she can find on the zombies.
Gripping the Swiss knife, still sticky with blood, Anran smiles. She opens the blade and uses it to pry the diamonds from the zombie’s skull, feeling a twisted satisfaction in the act.
