Chapter 114: Let's Go to the Security Room to Find It
"There’s only one. What will you do when it's finished?" Liu Yuan doesn’t move, her face filled with worry as she holds Hengheng in her arms and sits on the sofa. She watches Anran feed Doll, her expression growing more anxious. “You still have to feed Doll. The food’s already been taken by Wang Xin and the others. We don’t have anything left to eat.”
In that moment, the killing that just occurred seems almost insignificant compared to the crisis of survival. The weight of their situation overshadows everything else.
“Let’s wait until Hengheng finishes the apple. Once the children are asleep, we’ll go out to find more supplies.”
Although Anran swore after Chen Jiao’s death that she would never again leave her child in the hands of others during the apocalypse, the situation is different now. Hengheng is just a child, and Anran won’t risk bringing the children. Back when she went out with Chen Jiao, she left Doll, but this time, she only plans to go around the community.
“The supplies outside have already been searched by Wang Xin and his men,” Liu Yuan says, shaking her head. "Not just outside—every household in this building has already been raided by Wang Xin and his group. There’s nothing left."
“Then we’ll go to the security room!” Anran says this without hesitation and doesn’t say another word. She hadn’t planned to search outside for supplies. Since the food from both the first phase of the community and the entire street is now in the security room, Anran decides to head there to check things out.
Now it depends on Liu Yuan’s response. After all, the two of them have already killed two men together. If Liu Yuan chooses to sit at home and starve instead of fighting for survival, Anran has no qualms about abandoning her and fighting alone.
Liu Yuan, still holding Hengheng, sits quietly next to Anran. After a long silence, she finally seems to make up her mind. She nods slowly, her eyes filled with a distant, almost desperate madness.
Later that night, when Doll and Hengheng have fallen asleep, Anran waves at Liu Yuan, signaling her to follow. She leads Liu Yuan to the kitchen and hands her a fine steel kitchen knife.
“Do you want to use this?”
Liu Yuan takes the steel knife from Anran and looks at it. In fact, her own home also has such a knife, one that she bought when she and Anran were shopping in a supermarket and participated in a promotion event. Each of them got one.
At the time, she thought the knife was heavy and good for chopping bones, but now, holding it, Liu Yuan feels like it is as light as a piece of paper, with no weight or feeling in her hands.
The key question is: they’re just going out for a quick look, and will return soon. Why would they need a knife?
"For safety, just in case." Anran smiles at Liu Yuan with a faint, weary expression, then turns and heads for the door. She opens it and steps out first.
A knife is essential in the apocalypse. Even if you’re just going out for a walk, you need to be prepared for self-defense—especially when heading to the security room, a place filled with danger.
Liu Yuan follows her closely, and the two of them take the elevator to the first floor. From there, they head straight into the community’s green area, which has a faint greenish glow.
As they leave the building, Anran purposely glances at the potted pink snow mountain flowers she moved to the greenery earlier. The flowers are still blooming brightly, almost as though they are keeping watch for her, giving Anran a sense of reassurance.
It seems that no one is around, so Anran feels a little more at ease. She leads Liu Yuan toward the security room.
