The Losers' Proposal
The man stood at the podium, his voice steady yet carrying a weight that silenced the entire hall.
“Everyone, please listen.”
His gaze swept across the crowd. Hundreds of eyes stared back at him—some weary, some fierce, some still flickering with the trauma of recent battles. They were all that remained. The last survivors of a war that had nearly wiped their kind from existence.
“We are the defeated. We are the fugitives.”
A low murmur rippled through the audience, but no one interrupted. They knew it was true. They had lost everything. Their homes, their pride, their future. All that was left was this shabby underground auditorium and the faint hope that somehow, they could keep breathing a little longer.
“We failed to overcome the crisis that overwhelmed us. If it hadn’t been for our benefactor, we wouldn’t even be standing here talking like this.”
The man’s voice grew firmer. He placed both hands on the podium, leaning forward as if to imprint every word directly into their hearts.
“To ensure the same crisis never comes again, I stand before you today with a single proposal.”
The hall fell into absolute silence. Even the faint hum of the old ventilation system seemed to hold its breath.
“Let us hide magic from this world. Magic… and everything connected to it.”
For a moment, no one reacted. The words hung in the air like a spell that hadn’t quite taken shape. Then, as understanding dawned, the reaction exploded.
"What the hell are you saying?!"
"Hide magic? Are you insane?!"
⟨ The Great Concealment ⟩
Shouts erupted from every corner. Fists slammed against chairs. A few people jumped to their feet, faces flushed with disbelief and anger. The man at the podium simply waited, unflinching, until the storm began to subside.
Only then did he speak again, his tone calm but laced with unyielding resolve.
“Think about it. Every time magic has revealed itself, humanity has hunted us down like vermin. They fear what they cannot understand. They destroy what they fear. We’ve already seen it happen—twice in the last century alone.”
He raised a hand, and a faint shimmer of light danced between his fingers before vanishing. A simple demonstration. A reminder of the power they all carried.
“Our benefactor has given us one last chance. A way to live among them without being noticed. We will weave our society into the shadows of their world. We will build hidden gates, veiled markets, secret academies. We will become the urban legends they whisper about but never truly believe.”
A woman in the front row stood up slowly. Her robes were tattered, but her eyes burned with quiet intelligence.
“And what about our children? What about the next generation? Will we force them to live as liars?”
The speaker met her gaze without hesitation.
“Better a liar than a corpse. We lost because we were too visible. Too proud. Too convinced that our power made us invincible. This time, we will be invisible. We will adapt. We will thrive in the cracks of their concrete jungles, in the forgotten corners of their cities. And one day—when the time is right—we may step forward again. But not as conquerors. As neighbors.”
The murmurs grew softer now. Some faces still showed resistance, but others… others were beginning to see it. The exhaustion in their eyes was slowly giving way to a fragile spark of possibility.
The man lowered his voice, almost to a whisper, yet every ear in the hall caught his final words.
“This world is not ready for us. So let us make ourselves ready for this world. Let us disappear… so that we may survive.”
He stepped back from the podium. The silence that followed was heavier than any shout could have been.
Somewhere in the back row, a young girl with messy silver hair clutched the hem of her oversized coat and stared at the stage with wide, curious eyes. She didn’t fully understand everything that had just been said.
But she felt it.
The beginning of something enormous.
A new era was dawning—one where magic would no longer blaze in the open sky, but instead flicker quietly beneath the neon lights of a modern city. An era of hidden power, careful schemes, and perhaps… a little bit of lazy, comfortable living for those who had suffered enough.
The girl tilted her head, a small smile tugging at her lips.
This might actually be kind of fun.
