Dead by Daylight Overdrive (2)
The killer known as ChewyCreator froze mid-pursuit the instant the man appeared before him, abandoning his chase of the other survivor.
Survivors were supposed to run from killers. That was simply how the game worked. And in Overdrive Mode, where two killers hunted at once, survival was everything.
Yet the survivor standing before him was walking forward instead. Striding straight toward him with bold, confident steps.
It almost felt like dramatic sound effects were thundering behind the man—some majestic go go go go theme.
“This guy’s using a custom avatar. Must be a streamer. Cocky bastard!”
ChewyCreator shouted words no one could hear and swung the massive rectangular cleaver in his hand. The distance was close. There was no way he could miss.
His sense of range, honed from slaughtering dozens or even hundreds of survivors in Overdrive Mode, had never failed him before.
But the survivor in front of him dodged the cleaver with ridiculous ease. A single step evaded the swing, and two more carried him behind the killer’s back.
The killer was clearly faster, yet somehow the man had done it. With his hands clasped behind his back, no less.
“Pathetic. Who but a pig would allow themselves to be hit by such a sluggish blade?”
And then the taunt.
ChewyCreator ground his teeth. The killer he was playing as was Butcher—the slaughterer. With a pig’s head on his shoulders, the nickname “pig” naturally followed.
Butcher was ChewyCreator’s favorite and most frequently played killer. He despised the pig moniker.
So the moment Myeong-yun uttered the word “pig,” ChewyCreator saw red. He resolved to hunt this man and this man alone until the match ended.
“I’m going to kill you!”
“Good. At least you have some spirit.”
ChewyCreator swung his massive cleaver with frantic vigor. Most survivors would have been desperately running to maintain distance from the killers.
Instead, the man dressed entirely in black stayed just a few steps away, toying with him.
The cleaver couldn’t even graze him.
“I’m clearly faster—why can’t I hit him?!”
With a furious cry, ChewyCreator began spinning the chain in his left hand. If normal attacks wouldn’t work, he would simply use a skill.
Butcher’s skill, Binding Chain, could be used up to three times in succession. It would wrap around a survivor and yank them straight to him.
“Go! Chewy! Drag that bastard over here!”
ChewyCreator had even named his chain “Chewy.”
The sharp chain, named after a once-popular dessert, flew toward the survivor.
The survivor glanced at the incoming chain and casually sidestepped, but the chain altered its trajectory and continued flying toward him.
“You wouldn’t have seen that coming!”
From the way the man moved, he looked like a newbie who only trusted his physical reflexes. ChewyCreator was certain the chain would land.
Yet the survivor leaped into the air at the last moment, using the chain that had just changed direction as a stepping stone. He landed lightly on it while it was still flying past.
“Whoa, fuck. That’s not fair!”
The sight made ChewyCreator shout despite himself. The absurd, bug-like play had drawn curses from his lips.
The survivor jumped down from the chain with casual grace, finally unclasping his hands from behind his back and extending one forward.
Then came the provocation.
“You will have to try harder than that.”
The way he crooked his finger was utterly infuriating.
Completely blinded by rage, ChewyCreator charged straight at Myeong-yun. If he could just close the distance, he could attack. That was his only thought.
But no matter how close he got, Myeong-yun refused to let a single strike land.
In the end, ChewyCreator had no choice but to call for the other killer, who had been rampaging elsewhere.
“Help me over here! Please, just help me kill this one insane bastard!”
Myeong-yun watched with his hands still clasped behind his back as the killer before him suddenly stopped attacking and began shouting at the top of his lungs.
“It seems he is calling for his comrade.”
In response to Butcher’s cry, the other killer came trudging over from afar. The heartbeat sound doubled in intensity, yet Myeong-yun remained perfectly calm.
He simply waited with his hands behind his back for the second killer to arrive.
The newcomer was also someone he had never seen before. A Gunslinger with pistols holstered at both hips—the second killer after Butcher.
Dressed like a gunslinger from a western, he wore a cowboy hat pulled low over his eyes and had a cigarette clamped between his lips. The long, tattered coat dragged along the ground as he approached.
The Gunslinger met Butcher’s gaze. Butcher immediately pointed at Myeong-yun and began gesturing wildly.
The Gunslinger looked at Butcher, offered a faint smile, then drew both pistols from his hips and opened fire.
Bang! Bang!
Two bullets whistled past Myeong-yun’s side. He had known they wouldn’t hit him and therefore hadn’t bothered dodging, but to the viewers it looked very different.
Myeong-yun gave a small smile as he watched the Gunslinger aim both barrels at him.
The man clearly thought he was too terrified to move. His arrogant posture made that obvious.
Did he truly believe a mere toy like that could threaten a murim master? Real experts moved faster than bullets.
Myeong-yun unclasped his hands from behind his back, crooked a finger, and spoke.
“Go on, shoot. If you manage to land even a single bullet, this seat shall praise you.”
At his words, the Gunslinger began firing both pistols wildly.
Myeong-yun walked forward through the hail of bullets. One step. Two steps.
Even as he slowly advanced, not a single bullet touched him. It looked as if the bullets themselves were avoiding him.
After a few more steps, he stood directly in front of the Gunslinger.
The man’s pistols clicked uselessly—both magazines empty.
Myeong-yun gave a light chuckle and tapped the Gunslinger’s abdomen with the back of his hand. The man was noticeably taller than him.
“You need more practice, my friend.”
Survivors could not deal damage to killers, so the strike did no harm. Yet the Gunslinger seemed to suffer massive mental damage instead.
The fact that he had failed to land a single shot from such close range with dual pistols made his entire body tremble.
Seeing the man’s furious stance, Myeong-yun began to back away to draw more aggro—only to notice something strange.
…This is not anger.
The emotion radiating from the Gunslinger was not rage. Myeong-yun had assumed the gestures were born of fury since he could not hear the man’s voice.
But what he sensed now was closer to ecstasy.
Is he shaking with joy?
Myeong-yun paused in genuine bewilderment and stared at the Gunslinger.
The man looked back at him for a moment, then holstered both pistols and dropped into a deep, formal bow.
“Hah!”
In truth, the situation was this.
The player controlling the Gunslinger, Sexy4Eva, had been at the campfire thinking:
Wow, this is insane. His real body is fucking hot. Such noble dignity is just pouring off him!
With his limited vocabulary, he had been desperately trying to praise Myeong-yun.
Sexy4Eva was an ardent subscriber. Even when Myeong-yun played as a killer, he had queued as survivor to snipe a match against him. Unfortunately, his survivor MMR was too high, so they never met.
But his killer MMR was not nearly as high. So he had queued as killer this time on a whim, hoping for the best.
And then he had encountered Myeong-yun in the flesh.
He had wanted to speak to him from the campfire, but communication between survivors and killers was impossible. He had wanted to drop to his knees and bow like the other viewers, but the system would not allow it.
Then the game began.
Thinking he might run into Myeong-yun if he focused on the match, he had been busy beating down survivors when he heard another killer calling for help.
Wondering why he was being summoned, he ran over—only to find Myeong-yun waiting there.
“Help me kill this guy! He’s completely insane!”
“Dude, you don’t know about the trending Heavenly Demon these days? The Heavenly Demon?”
Sexy4Eva saw his chance.
He could not pass up the opportunity to witness the Heavenly Demon’s skills up close.
“Watch carefully. This is what the Heavenly Demon is like.”
Smiling, Sexy4Eva drew his dual pistols and began firing.
Each pistol held six rounds—for a total of twelve. Every hit generated a stack. At four stacks, the survivor would enter a wounded state.
The accuracy was terribly low, so beginners rarely picked it, but in the hands of a skilled player it was a killer that earned the highest praise from survivors.
Sexy4Eva knew his aim was decent. He had just finished massacring survivors with those very shots.
Now he wondered how the Heavenly Demon would react to modern firearms.
Two gunshots rang out, but Myeong-yun did not flinch. He clearly knew the bullets would not reach him and therefore did not move.
As if to prove it, he began walking forward while taunting.
Sexy4Eva carefully aimed both pistols at Myeong-yun, yet the man simply advanced with an amused expression.
With light steps that danced between bullets, he closed the distance until he stood right in front of him. Then he tapped his abdomen and spoke.
“You have quite an adorable technique…”
The words sounded slightly distorted, but that was how they reached Sexy4Eva’s ears.
The moment he heard Myeong-yun’s voice, overwhelming emotion made his body tremble. He dropped into a deep bow and shouted at the top of his lungs.
“Heavenly Demon Descent! Ten Thousand Demons Bow in Reverence—!!”
He hoped his voice had reached the man.
He prayed it had.
Watching the scene from the side, ChewyCreator muttered under his breath.
“Ah, fuck… This match is nothing but crazy people.”
