Game Shutdown Blues and a Gender Bender Awakening
The game is done for. The game is done for. Well, technically it's about to shut down, but with the death sentence already handed down, the coffin nailed shut, and the grave dug, I can confidently say this game's kaput.
"...Shit."
I couldn't hold back the burning rage inside and ended up breaking my no-daytime-drinking seal. Even though I don't like booze much. Scratch that—not "don't like," I hate the stuff. It's bitter, tastes like crap, leaves my stomach churning like I'm gonna puke the next day, and my head throbs like it's splitting open.
But right now? I needed a drink. I poured cola halfway into my mug, topped it with soju and beer in rough proportions, stirred vigorously with chopsticks, and downed it in one go.
The soju and beer mixed smooth enough, and the cola masked the alcohol bite pretty well. Felt like I could chug this all day.
"Ugh... I'm gettin' buzzed, totally buzzed."
Muttering that, I stared blankly at my smartphone screen. The game UI burned into my retinas. A 2D bishoujo character stared back from the display.
I've been deep into subculture—otaku culture, or "dege" as the haters call it—since fifth grade. That's a solid ten years. Naturally, my games skewed toward the bishoujo variety.
I've played all sorts, and about a year ago, I stumbled on Night Rise and got hooked. I poured my soul into it. Despite the lacking gameplay, meh character designs you couldn't call stellar, a pilfered UI that screamed "why not just copy better?", a bland story, and glacial updates.
...Wait, why the hell did I even play this?
Was I hypnotized? Brainwashed? Is this game secretly a mind-control app?
"...Ugh, grrr. My brain's trying to stitch itself back up now that I've seen the shutdown news...!!!"
Even the booze couldn't fully numb the brutal reality.
...Did I overdo it? My body's heavy. Kinda wanna just crash like this.
I flopped onto the floor and shut my eyes.
"...What if I wake up in the Catharsis Continent?"
...Yeah, I'm wasted. Spouting nonsense about isekai-ing into the game world.
I let out a goofy chuckle and closed my eyes. Just a quick nap, then I'll screenshot my account. If the game's gone and my account vanishes, at least I'll have memories, right?
Should I call it lucky? Or cursed?
After about 14 hours of solid sleep, I woke up not in the Catharsis Continent. First thing I saw was my familiar bedroom ceiling, and I was sprawled on my own floor.
But something else had happened instead. My chest was packed with flesh. My gut fat? Gone. Did someone redistribute my belly flab to my boobs while I slept?
My whole body had shrunk too. Shorter height, less bulk, smaller hands and feet, tinier face. But bigger breasts and longer hair balanced the scales a bit.
My voice came out thin and high-pitched. Still sounded pleasant enough—call it a win.
And the final loss...
...No need to spell it out.
"...Thought only the game was getting axed. Guess manhood's outta service too."
I let out a deep sigh. Silver lining to girlhood? Zero hangover after last night's binge. My brain was sharp as ever, not pickled.
First things first—what now? My gaze drifted southward.
"...Gotta check my ID and bank account."
The photo on my ID matched the face I'd just confirmed in the mirror: a stunning woman. Unreal pretty, like Photoshop levels.
"Name changed too, huh?"
Hari Lee. That's me now.
Name swap had me paranoid, so I checked my contacts.
"Nothing changed here."
Aunt's number, Uncle's number—all intact.
...Still, better safe.
"Hello? Aunt?"
(Huh? Hari? What's up with you calling first? Didja rethink that offer I mentioned before?)
I breathed a silent sigh of relief. If a stranger's voice had answered, or even Aunt but acting like she didn't know me... disaster.
A weight lifted off my chest.
"Oh, no. Just wondering how you've been."
(Same old, same old. How about you? Doing okay?)
...Not like I just flew back from Thailand or anything, but I woke up a girl.
"Yeah, nothin' much, hangin' in there."
No way I'd say the truth—she'd drag me to a psych ward. Kept it vanilla.
Five minutes of small talk later, natural hang-up vibes.
(Take care. Eat proper.)
"You too, stay healthy."
Call ended. Good—my circle's unchanged, and they see me as always-a-girl. No ID crisis.
Bank money should be fine too. But let's peek...
......Huh.
"Weird?"
My balance was lower, actually.
What happened? Pulled up last three months' transactions.
Boom—figured it out.
"Not just turned girl. Turned girl and regressed a year."
Assets reset to a year ago. Minimal income since made it seem like it'd grown.
Now apps made sense: old deleted ones back, recent installs gone.
Regression, regression. Any hot investment tips in the last year?
...Nah. Daily game grind zombie like me? No clue.
Sighed and fired up NewTube on instinct.
That instinct froze my face solid.
"...What kinda bullshit."
A Japanese otaku anime flick hitting 10 million viewers in Korea? Clickbait lies don't even bait me.
...If it wasn't from a legit news channel, I'd scroll past.
A wild hypothesis hit me. Absurd, but only explanation for what I saw.
Frantically YouTubed: anime, otaku, dege, subculture.
"Holy crap."
My guess nailed it. Otaku culture wasn't niche anymore. Mainstream as hell. "Dege" barely existed.
Why? Beats me. Maybe not just regressed—dropped into parallel Earth.
Whatever. Demand for otaku stuff skyrocketed. Supply follows. Endless fun ahead.
"Hold up. More otakus means..."
More otakus = more potential Night Rise players.
Convert some to real users, revenue tops server costs, reinvest...
"Might stop the shutdown."
And my role?
"Time to streamer for Night Rise promo."
Me turning bishoujo, regressing a year, landing in mainstream-otaku world—all fate's setup. God gave me a shot to save it.
"I'm gonna make it happen."
Hello, Knights who loved Night Rise.
Regrettably, the Night Rise team must bid you farewell.
Night Rise will terminate service at 23:59 on XX/XX/20XX.
Thank you so much for loving Night Rise until now.
