Chapter 56: Could Mom Be Jealous?
Chapter 56: Could Mom Be Jealous?
Entering the kitchen, I brought out the dishes I had prepared one by one and set them on the dining table.
Placing a bowl of Millet Pumpkin Porridge in front of Mom, I cautiously took a seat across from her.
I picked up a piece of fish and offered it to her. "Mom, try this fish. It was still jumping when I bought it today."
Mom didn't respond. Her lovely phoenix eyes stared at the fish I held before her, as if she were lost in thought.
Suddenly, she rose gracefully and walked toward the kitchen. I quickly called out from behind her, "Mom, what do you need? I'll get it for you."
Mom ignored me and walked straight inside.
Confused, I had no choice but to follow her.
Mom walked up to the counter. she glanced at the steamer on the table, then suddenly turned back around.
Crap!
I cursed inwardly. Mom’s mind was truly sharp.
Sure enough, as soon as Mom sat back down, her face was clouded with an even more piercing chill. She muttered to herself, "I saw two steamer baskets in there."
"Uh..." My mouth felt dry. I managed a strained, "Yes..."
Mom’s tone was flat. "You just delivered food to Song Yu, didn't you?"
Although Mom’s expression seemed natural, I could sense a hint of turbulence beneath the surface.
I had no choice but to nod obediently.
Mom gave a slight nod and set down her chopsticks. "It’s only right to bring her food since you’re the one who injured her."
Hmm? Mom is actually being this reasonable?
Something was wrong!
Sure enough, a second later, Mom pushed the plate of Grouper toward me. "Take this fish to her as well. Let her nourish herself properly."
I knew better than to take her words at face value.
I quickly put on a flattering smile, sat down beside Mom, and gently took one of her small hands in mine. "How could I do that, Mom? Her fish was just something I made on the side. This meal was prepared primarily for you."
"Mom, think about it. If it weren't because you like fish, would I have even steamed it?"
Mom gave her arm a gentle tug, trying to shake off my hand, but I shamelessly gripped her small hand tightly, refusing to let go.
Mom turned her head and shot me a brief glance before helplessly allowing me to hold her hand.
"Mom, try your son's cooking."
With my other hand, I picked up a piece of fish and brought it to the edge of her red lips.
Despite my utmost attentiveness, Mom still didn't give me a good look. She kept her pretty face taut and remained silent.
After a brief stalemate, my arm began to ache, and I was forced to lower my chopsticks.
Mom’s jade-like fingers lightly tapped the edge of the table. I knew this meant she was about to speak.
I quickly straightened my posture, though I still didn't let go of her soft, delicate hand.
Mom’s voice was somewhat stern. "It seems you haven't taken a single word I've said to heart."
"That's not true. I've been following your orders strictly, treating Song Yu as nothing more than an ordinary friend..."
Mom snapped irritably, "That's not what I'm talking about!"
"Then what are you talking about?"
Mom gave me a slight glare. "You really weren't listening!"
I gave a sheepish grin to hide my embarrassment.
She cleared her throat and looked away. "I told you to focus on your studies, yet here you are delivering food to another woman?!"
"Making one portion is the same as making two. Since I had to cook for you anyway, I just made an extra portion for her while I was at it."
Mom said petulantly, "Then you don't need to cook for me anymore! From now on, I'll eat at the company!"
"No!"
I cut Mom off immediately.
Mom glanced at me. "You say no, so it's no?"
I started to get anxious. "Your stomach isn't great. How can you eat at the office every day?"
"That's none of your business!"
"Fine, fine, I get it now," I said helplessly. "You just don't want me giving food to Song Yu, right?"
I flashed another flattering smile. "Alright, Mom, I promise you. I won't bring her food anymore. From now on, I'll put all my heart into my studies. I'll study hard and improve every day!"
Mom’s face remained tense, and she didn't respond.
I continued to play the fool, saying many things to make her laugh. Only then did the frost covering Mom’s beautiful face gradually begin to melt.
Mom looked at me with her phoenix eyes and spoke softly. "If it's truly inconvenient for Song Yu to get food, I can make special arrangements for her. Don't worry about the chef; I can't guarantee they'll be the best in Wanghai City, but they will definitely be the best chef in the Chiyue Group."
Mom paused slightly. "Furthermore, I can arrange for a girl to deliver the food, so you won't have to worry about her safety."
"Alright, alright." I waved my hand with a wry smile. "Mom, please don't do that. It would only make her feel uncomfortable. Besides, with food delivery services being so advanced these days, there's no need for all that."
Mom nodded slightly. "Fine. Since you put it that way, I won't say any more. Let's eat."
"Here, Mom, have a taste."
I picked up another piece of fish and brought it to her red lips.
This time, Mom didn't refuse. She lowered her head slightly, her thin red lips parting just enough to take the fish into her mouth, chewing gently.
As her elegant neck moved with her swallow, she nodded in approval. "It's quite delicious."
Watching Mom’s sexy, rosy lips, a ripple stirred in my heart. The thoughts I had previously discarded began to flicker back to life.
Mom’s behavior was clearly a sign of jealousy!
Could it be that Mom... actually likes me too?
I picked up another piece of fish. "Have another piece."
Mom opened her lips to take it, saying as she ate, "Alright, that's enough. Sit back and eat your own food."
"It's fine. You've been tired all day, Mom. A little thing like this is nothing."
Sitting beside Mom, I tirelessly removed the bones and scales, feeding the fish into her small mouth piece by piece.
Seeing Mom enjoy the food, my heart felt incredibly sweet. Because of her slightly jealous reaction tonight, I felt an indescribable sense of sweetness and satisfaction.
As Mom sipped her Millet Pumpkin Porridge, she asked, "What time did you drop Xixi off at school today?"
"Around two or three o'clock, I think."
"Did Xixi throw a tantrum?"
"No. Why would she throw a tantrum?"
"Did... did she mention me?"
Looking at Mom’s hesitant expression and thinking about the "love-hate" dynamic between this mother and daughter, I couldn't help but laugh. "No."
Mom’s expression darkened slightly. "Is Xixi still mad at me?"
"How could she be?" I replied. "It was such a small thing. Besides, Xixi isn't the type to hold a grudge. With her personality, she's probably forgotten all about it by now, let alone still being angry."
"I see." Mom nodded gently. "How much allowance did you give her?"
"I gave her three thousand. It should be enough for her, especially since the National Day Holiday is coming up soon and she'll be coming home before long."
"Good," Mom said softly. "I'll transfer it to your phone later."
"It's just a bit of pocket change."
We chatted idly about this and that. Before I knew it, the night sky outside the window had turned hazy.
"Mom, I'll clear the dishes. You go and get some rest."
"Okay."
Once Mom turned to go back to her room, I jumped up in excitement and threw a few punches in the air.
Mom’s behavior tonight was completely unexpected. It seemed I wasn't entirely without a way to enter her closed-off heart.
Perhaps, in the near future, I really could make my dream come true and win both Mom’s body and soul.
