The Price of Penance
The morning sun streamed through the windows, illuminating the living room just as the sound of the front door clicking shut signaled Lee Hyunwoo’s departure for work. Kim Eunju’s shoulders flinched at the noise. Moments later, a rhythmic tapping echoed against the door, and a look of terror and despair flickered across her face.
When she opened the door, Lee Han was standing there. He wore his usual smile, but to Eunju, it looked like a threat.
Seeing Lee Han enter the living room, Jinwoo clapped his hands and laughed, clearly delighted. Lee Han approached the boy naturally and scooped him up into his arms.
"Did you sleep well, our Jinwoo?"
Lee Han asked with a gentle tone. Jinwoo beamed, reaching out to touch Lee Han’s face. Lee Han carried the boy into the living room, his playful teasing and Jinwoo’s laughter filling the space.
Kim Eunju sat on the sofa, watching the scene unfold. Her hands were clenched tightly around the sofa cushion, and her face was deathly pale. While the sight of Lee Han playing with her son appeared peaceful on the surface, to Eunju, it was a form of exquisite torture.
How did it come to this... she repeated in her mind.
Is this truly the punishment I deserve...
Tears welled in her eyes. The sound of her son’s happy laughter only deepened her agony.
Even while playing with Jinwoo, Lee Han occasionally cast meaningful glances toward Eunju. Each time, she shuddered. She had no idea how long this would continue or how much longer she could endure it.
In the master bedroom, only the sound of Jinwoo’s steady breathing could be heard. From the living room, the ragged, heavy breathing of Lee Han and Kim Eunju leaked out intermittently.
Every time Lee Han’s hands roamed over her body, Eunju trembled. At first, it had been a violent shaking born of revulsion and terror, but as time passed, her reactions grew weaker. A hollow emptiness began to settle in her eyes, and her body became increasingly numb.
Though her physical resistance to his touch had faded, a deep, swirling vortex of pain and despair remained within her. In the living room, where sunlight filtered through the curtains, their shadows stretched long and distorted against the wall.
Lee Han leaned in close to her ear and whispered.
"This is the punishment for the wrong you committed. It is the price you must pay for your sins."
His voice was low and cold.
Lee Han’s hand sliced through the air, striking Eunju’s hip with force. A sharp crack echoed through the silent living room. Her skin flushed red, and a jolt of pain shot through her entire body. She instinctively hunched forward, trembling, but she bit her lip until it bled, desperately stifling a scream for fear of waking Jinwoo.

With the rhythmic crack, crack of his hand striking her, Lee Han’s movements grew increasingly vigorous. His powerful motions made Eunju’s body sway back and forth like a doll. Her knuckles turned white as she gripped the edge of the sofa, pouring all her strength into holding on.
Tears streamed endlessly from her eyes. At first, they were tears of pain and shame, but as time went on, their meaning shifted. Her gaze grew increasingly vacant, as if she were drifting away from reality. It felt as though her soul were being pulled from her flesh.
Lee Han’s words seeped into her consciousness like poison. Initially, she had tried to resist them, but they were beginning to sound like the truth. The eyes that had once been filled with terror and disgust slowly clouded over, finally losing their spark of life.
This is the punishment I must receive... because I was wrong...
Eunju repeated this to herself incessantly. As this thought consumed her mind, the link to reality seemed to snap.
As Lee Han continued his acts, Eunju’s consciousness grew even hazier. Her body remained in the room, but her spirit seemed to have drifted far away. The tears flowing from her eyes were no longer a simple expression of physical pain. They were a mark of self-reproach, resignation, and a questioning of her own worth.
As time passed, Eunju began to accept this cruel situation as the natural consequence of her own faults. Her body mechanically complied with Lee Han’s demands, while her heart sank deeper into the encroaching darkness. The sound of her self-esteem shattering into pieces echoed within her.
In the sun-drenched living room, Kim Eunju’s soul was slowly, but surely, collapsing. As Lee Han’s words and actions hammered away at her psyche, she sank deeper into a swamp of despair. Every certainty she held about who she was and what she lived for wavered, and she began to accept all of this as the fate she deserved.
By evening, Lee Hyunwoo returned home from work. The living room was filled with the dim light of the night sky, and Kim Eunju was in the kitchen preparing dinner. Jinwoo clapped his hands in joy at the sight of his father.
"How was your day? Did Jinwoo behave?"
Lee Hyunwoo approached Eunju and asked. She responded with a bright smile.
"Yes, he was very good. Our Jinwoo played so well today."
Her voice held a sense of calm, but deep within her eyes, an unidentifiable shadow lingered.
The three of them sat at the table and began dinner. Lee Hyunwoo talked about his day at the office, occasionally reaching out to pinch Jinwoo’s cheek. Eunju watched them, smiling.
To think it could be this peaceful... It’s fine, because I am paying for my sins...
Eunju muttered to herself.
On the surface, they were an ordinary, happy family. Sitting around the table, laughing, they looked perfectly harmonious to any observer. But Eunju’s inner world was becoming increasingly distorted. A logic designed to rationalize her situation began to take root in her heart.
She now accepted her relationship with Lee Han as the necessary punishment she had to endure.
Because I am bearing this pain, my family can be happy.
This twisted logic consumed her consciousness. Paradoxically, this thought served to lessen her guilt toward Lee Hyunwoo. She began to believe that by "sacrificing" herself, she was protecting her family.
After dinner, Lee Hyunwoo carried Jinwoo toward the living room. Their backs looked peaceful and happy. Eunju stood before the sink, staring at them, momentarily dazed.
What she saw was no longer a family bound by pure love. It looked like a scene on a stage—a phantom she had to desperately protect, an illusion maintained at the cost of the agony she endured.
Eunju’s gaze blurred. Inside her, reality and fantasy, love and duty, happiness and pain were mixing to create an increasingly complex vortex of emotions. And within that vortex, her original self was sinking into deeper, darker depths.
Eunju walked toward the living room slowly, as if moving through a dream. A soft smile still lingered on her face, but it was now nothing more than a mask. A deepening darkness had taken hold in her eyes.
She took her seat next to Lee Hyunwoo and Jinwoo on the sofa. Leaning her head on her husband’s shoulder, she repeated to herself:
I am a sinner. I am being punished to protect this happiness.
Lee Han’s presence followed her consciousness like a shadow. His control had become a fate she could not escape.
The three of them gathered in the living room appeared, on the surface, to be perfectly peaceful. The sounds from the TV, Jinwoo’s small giggles, and Lee Hyunwoo’s gentle voice blended together to paint the picture of a tranquil home.
Yet, deep within this peace, the tragedy of Kim Eunju’s inner life was hidden. She smiled at her husband and child, but behind that smile lay profound despair and pain. Even in this moment with her family, a corner of her heart was occupied by her relationship with Lee Han and the distorted reality it had brought about.
Kim Eunju’s soul was sinking into deeper darkness. She believed she was sacrificing herself to protect her family’s happiness, but in the process, she was losing her very essence. Beneath the surface of apparent happiness, her identity was slowly crumbling, and the space was being filled by the twisted reality Lee Han had created.
In a spacious office decorated with high-end furniture and fine art, the city’s nightscape stretched out beyond a large window. Chairman Park, with his white hair, sat in a premium leather chair, staring at a monitor. A satisfied smile spread across his wrinkled face.
On the screen, the process of a woman’s downfall was playing. Every time the light in the woman’s eyes faded, Chairman Park’s own eyes sparkled. He used his remote to replay specific scenes over and over.
"This is true art..."
Chairman Park muttered, his gaze shifting to the man on the screen. Watching the transformation of the young man he had first seen—the way his initial purity was gradually corrupted by violence and power—his excitement mounted. His fingers gripped the armrests of his chair, then released.
When the scene played where the woman accepted her situation as a "punishment," Chairman Park burst into a low laugh. But his true interest lay in the man’s change. Watching a pure, young soul degenerate exactly according to his design gave him the ultimate pleasure.
"The corruption of a pure soul is the greatest masterpiece I have ever dreamed of..."
Chairman Park leaned back comfortably and stared at the screen. His eyes were already filled with anticipation for his next "work." The smile on his lips deepened, his expression a mixture of dark desire and expectation.
