A Rookie Mistake?
Even though Dyna’s words were a bit quirky, she charged straight into the horde of Walkers as if she meant to prove to everyone that she was the greatest here-knight of them all.
Thud. Crack!
[Haha! Owner! Please submit me!]
It looked exactly like a lone wolf slaughtering a flock of sheep.
She swung her heavy hammer with one hand, shattering everything in her path, then grabbed the head of a charging Walker that lunged at her during the swing and crushed it with raw strength alone.
“She’s going on a solo rampage.”
Me and the Elf couldn’t even muster the courage to do that much.
The Walker with the thick armor moved with impossible agility—two legs, as if it could walk upright—and stomped its knee, forcing it into a forced sitting position. Then it stepped on the head of another Walker that had been crawling on all fours and left a disgusting trail of frost on the ground.
But no matter how brave a knight might be, numbers are numbers, right?
Dyna kept pushing through, and I quickly grabbed the bullet clip I’d dropped earlier and shoved it back into the open chamber just in time.
Click.
“I’ll shoot again! Hold on just a little longer, okay? Heeek?!”
Whoosh—!
At that moment, something whipped past right beside me.
I was already in the prone shooting stance, so the fresh bullet hole that appeared in the ground right next to me made me jump in shock and spin around.
“Get away! Run! Don’t stop!”
Tadadang! Tadadang! Ta-ang!
“Ugh, you crazy woman.”
Either the Walkers that hadn’t aggroed Dyna were flooding in from behind, or the dungeon’s setup was just to flank us from the rear—either way, the Elf was spraying bullets in every direction while surrounded by a massive pack of Walkers.
“Don’t come closer! Don’t you dare! You barbarians! Haven’t you watched any Western movies? Don’t come closer!”
“Ugh.”
The Elf kept up her lightning-fast draw, perfectly suited to her outfit, as Walkers approached her.
After emptying six rounds, she tossed the smoking revolver without hesitation, then pulled out another from her bandolier and opened fire again.
Unlike a porcupine or a badger calmly raising its sharp quills to meet the enemy’s attacks, the flustered and furious Elf kept yanking her chest holster open and continuing her rage-filled fast draw.
She had an almost miraculous hit rate—except for the fact that it was zero.
Honestly, all the Walkers lying around her right now had been killed by the revolvers she’d thrown.
‘Someone, please stop her. Shoot a little straighter.’
Whoosh—!
“Ugh?!”
Another bullet whipped past right beside me.
I yelped in alarm.
“Where the hell are you shooting?!”
“At your mouth?! If you’ve got time to talk, come here and tell me to stop!”
“How are you supposed to hit anything if you shoot like that? Heeek?!”
Whoosh—!
No time to worry about Dyna anymore—I immediately found cover and ducked down.
Dyna was taking the brunt of the enemy’s assault at the front line, and I really felt bad about it, but without that thick armor that could just shrug off bullets, I couldn’t afford to take risks.
It’s not like a metal slug where you put in a hundred won and get multiple lives.
I had to protect my own body.
“Elf, just keep shooting over there! I’ll help Dyna!”
“You damn monkey! You filthy yellow monkey!”
“Always acting so high and mighty, huh? This is your true face.”
Finally, after securing my back against the door of a parked car, I slipped out of the crowd of Walkers, grabbed the hammer again, and swept them away like a broom.
Tat-tat!
-Kkiek!
-Kiekieek!
“It’s been a while. Shooting real bullets that aren’t just special rounds—truly impressive.”
Because the distance was so close, every single shot I fired hit.
Dyna, clearing out the Walkers with holes in their bodies and opening up the path, turned toward me and shouted.
[Pretty good shooting! I was starting to worry that I’d have to take them down myself!]
“Do you have a quota?”
[No! I’m just trying not to lose this rush of adrenaline and heat! Keep going! Haha!]
Crack—!
Dyna stomped on the heads of Walkers that had fallen from my bullets, or kicked them aside when they were already completely still.
In the medieval days, brave knights would charge into enemy lines, and the soldiers behind them would gain courage and follow. Now, though, she was trying to keep firing.
But—!
Because it was a gun that didn’t hold that many rounds, after a few shots the clip ejected again.
I quickly tried to reload, but…
“Uh, there’s no more ammo?”
The bullet clips that Dyna had thrown at me during her crazy shooting had been left right where they fell.
Tat-tat!
I reached desperately for them, but…
Before I could even finish the thought, a voice from behind stopped me.
The Elf was still throwing revolvers at the enemy while screaming bullets.
“Hey! You’re still alive after being shot by my gun?!”
“Of course. I wasn’t hit by the bullets.”
Even with a perfect hit rate, the speed of her draw was insane.
Revolvers that scattered like assassinations were littered with crushed Walker heads everywhere.
“When I think about it, I’ve always just handled the wild Walkers myself. The Elf just keeps getting in the way.”
The Elf in front of me couldn’t even hit the target right in front of her. I’d never once seen her hit anything in the three years I’d known her, so I let out a long sigh and yanked the car door I’d been hiding behind.
“I’m coming! Just go slow, okay?”
“Hurry up! Come on!”
Teeng— ting—!
Whether she wanted help or not.
I’d grabbed a makeshift shield, but I clutched my chest with worry that I might accidentally get hit by a ricochet.
I slowly advanced toward the Elf.
Bang, teeng—!
Every step, bullets from the Elf’s shots and the shockwave hit the door, but I didn’t stop.
I needed her to keep supplying bullets, and I had to block any bullet that might hole my back.
But the biggest reason was obvious.
“It’s because of those ridiculous breasts, I swear.”
“Here! Here I come! Heeek?!”
Then, with only a few Walkers left, she threw the revolver she’d been holding with all her might and charged toward me.
“Don’t drag me over here!”
“Pay me for feeding and bedding you while I was there!”
She hid behind me like a scared cat.
At the same time, I tried to do the shield bash I’d learned from Dyna, just like the hero in those old hero movies who used a shield to beat up villains.
Terung—!
-Kiek!
That heavy, satisfying feel!
The Walker’s mouth snapped like castanets as it charged toward me, and I spun with centrifugal force without even realizing, the door still pressed against my body.
“Heeek?!”
The Elf, seeing me swing the door like a hammer-throwing athlete, ducked as if she might get hit, and when my centrifugal force reached its peak, she flung the door toward the Walkers.
-Kiek!
-Gurrk!
Walkers fell like dominoes from the flying door.
“Go! Fast! Fever time, fever time!”
“Time to clear their skulls!”
This was the few times in three years that the Elf and I had cooperated without arguing.
I swung my grenade launcher like a club, smashing Walker heads, and the Elf followed up with my revolver to finish them off.
Bang—!
Once the last Walker’s head had a hole in it, the Elf sighed happily at the smoking barrel, puffed out her chest, and struck a proud pose.
“Hmph, this town no longer needs guns.”
“Just do cleanup and—”
“Shut up! You’re interrupting my cool lines!”
This Western movie maniac…
After shouting at me, she looked embarrassed and quickly started gathering the revolvers she’d thrown.
Unlike her relaxed recovery, I was worried Dyna would be buried any second, so I told her without hesitation.
“You’re too slow. Right now Dyna is—”
“Nonsense! I’ve told you before, the here-knight race doesn’t fall just because there are more of them. Especially against physical attacks.”
“Huh?”
[Owner! I am your opponent right now!]
Despite my worry that she might get hurt, she was still swinging her hammer like a brave knight even after being buried among dozens of Walkers.
I understood why she looked so relaxed compared to the Elf—her toughness was on another level. Before I could admire it, the Elf, breathing heavily, yelled at me.
“I told you to hurry and help! Why are you ignoring me?!”
“Ignoring what? If I’d just walked straight over, I’d have been riddled with bullets too!”
“What’s it to you, slave? Do you think you can just abandon your owner and worry about my safety?! A real slave should prepare to have holes punched in them while saving me! Why are you so concerned with the here-knight race? Just save me first!”
Stop it already and pick me up!
Even so, the Elf waved her hand as if to say “whatever,” letting me know she’d forgive me as she looked at the crushed Walker parts and bullet holes.
“Even though you’re a here-knight, you’re not invincible. Hurry up and pick me up and help me.”
“Nngh.”
Since she said that, I rushed over and stuffed the revolvers she’d thrown like trash into her bandolier.
“Kyaa?!”
Wait, I had a little time.
I pretended to push them in, but secretly pressed my hand against her chest, paying her back for the near-miss bullet holes on my body.
“Wait! What are you touching?!”
“Huh? This is a rookie mistake, right?”
“A rookie mistake?!”
Even though I only brushed the back of my hand, it bounced back like a trampoline.
I promised her one day I’d use both hands to squeeze those breasts properly, and I waved my arms wildly at the angry Elf.
“Put both hands on your chest! Who calls that a rookie mistake? Kyaaa—!”
“Both hands on your chest?!”
“What are you doing?! Why are you touching my chest?!”
One hand was bad enough, but two?!
When I lifted both hands like playing on her vast chest, the Elf’s face turned bright red and she started jumping in place, screaming.
Her chest was bouncing up and down so much that it was almost hypnotic.
“You pervy monkey! You did that to me yesterday, and now—!”
“I don’t know what happened yesterday. The only reason my hands are on your chest is because you came to them, so I don’t see how I’m at fault…”
Then the ground rumbled.
“You’re calling it a dick again? You cheap—!”
The ground rumbled again.
[Hahaha! Is there no one here? The one who will knock me down and submit me! My legs are still this strong… mmm?]
Me, the Elf, and the pitch-black knight swinging the hammer between the Walkers all turned toward the source of the vibration at the same time.
Kuung— kooong—!
A heavy silence fell among us as we realized what it was.
Dyna, watching without saying a word, finally spoke.
[You mentioned a juggernaut, right?]
“Yes. That’s why I hired you.”
“Ugh, it’s way different from the ones I saw in the wild…”
At the far end of the road, where cars and people used to pass, stood a giant.
Three meters tall? Easily. It was like the giant robot from the childhood mecha anime, covered in car wreckage like armor, with a tiny public phone stuck on its head like a helmet.
-Grrrr…
“Shouldn’t we get out of the way now?”
“You think you can? I brought you here because of this uselessly tough here-knight. Hurry up and get ready to shoot!”
“Damn…”
The juggernaut slowly rolled its feet like an angry bull, ready to charge straight at us, so I climbed onto the roof of a nearby parked car.
I quickly grabbed the gear I’d abandoned, used it as a platform, arranged the clips I’d just picked up, and set up my grenade launcher on the gear.
[Celestin! Just confirming again, but if you suddenly change your mind—]
“I won’t! You said you’d lend me whatever I wanted! So hurry and block them!”
[Haha! You said it yourself!]
The here-knight kept tossing the clinging Walkers like garbage and charged toward the giant monster.
The giant monster didn’t care who was in front of it—it crushed and trampled through everything, charging straight at the here-knight.
“I thought this kind of fight was only possible in movie CG.”
Kwaaaaaaaang—!!
Both of us, who had just finished reloading and were running toward each other, collided.
The massive boom and shockwave that followed blasted toward us.
