Chapter 71: The Knife Is Broken Again
Chapter 71: The Knife Is Broken Again
Looking at the zombies, An Ran notices the blood mixed with brain matter, which is as sticky as yogurt. The brain tissue resembles the orange pulp added to yogurt.
She can no longer distinguish what is orange pulp, brain tissue, or diamond fragments with her naked eye; she has to pinch the particles between her fingers to feel them.
Meanwhile, Hu Zhen grips her knife, mentally preparing herself, and musters the courage to step through the door. She is taken aback upon seeing An Ran squatting on the ground, handling a large pool of black, asphalt-like sticky liquid filled with white and tender brain tissue.
Stunned for a moment, she can’t help but lean against the wall and vomit.
An Ran sets down the brain matter she is twisting, picks up a diamond, and pockets it. She turns to Hu Zhen’s back, says nothing, and stands up. Wiping her hands on her clothes, she points to a large pot of green plants beside the escalator and says, “Help me move that pot of tree to the ward. Thank you.”
An Ran isn’t sure what kind of tree it is, but it is covered in zombie brains, with black yogurt dripping onto the green leaves and some bone fragments mixed in. She feels it is obstructing her path. If she accidentally knocks it over, it won’t be good, and she feels a strange sympathy for the little tree. So, she decides to move it to her own ward.
As Hu Zhen continues to vomit, she turns back and gives An Ran an “OK” gesture. Her retching attracts some zombies on the escalator, guiding them toward her location. An Ran has no time to help Hu Zhen; she is too busy fighting off the zombies again.
By the time Hu Zhen finally manages to stop vomiting, she turns around and runs with the tree that An Ran asked her to carry. The tree isn’t very tall, and its species is hard to determine. The leaves are broad and well-trimmed at the pot end. Carrying the large potted plant all the way back to the ward, Hu Zhen sets it down on the floor, only to find a chunk of zombie brain stem hidden under the leaves.
She can’t help but lean over and dry heave again. Just as she is finishing, An Ran pushes the door open and walks in. Hu Zhen points at the brain matter on the tree leaves.
An Ran simply says, “Oh,” without much reaction, and goes to check on Doll.
The baby is sleeping well, no longer waking easily like a few days prior. She can now sleep for about an hour and a half, possibly because she is separated from He Wen. The two children no longer disturb each other, giving An Ran less to worry about each day and allowing her to sleep better.
However, it is hard to tell if the baby’s complexion is rosy; An Ran’s own face is smeared with black blood, and she hasn’t bothered to wipe it off.
After finishing her dry heaving, Hu Zhen gets up and walks to An Ran’s side. She raises her hand and grabs a tissue from the bedside table of her bed, wiping her mouth. Looking at the knife in An Ran’s hand, she asks, “Is the knife broken again?”
“Yeah, it’s not durable,” An Ran replies as she tucks the baby’s blanket in. She raises the fruit knife that has already been bent and says to Hu Zhen, “You’ll probably have to find a few more knives.”
It would be best to find a scalpel, but the operating room is on the top floor. An Ran can’t go up there to kill zombies until the safety hazards on the third floor are resolved. As she grows more adept at killing zombies, An Ran increasingly realizes the importance of having proper knives. If she can get a scalpel as a weapon now, it will definitely be much better than a fruit knife.
