Chapter 68: Still Waiting for Rescue
Chapter 68: Still Waiting for Rescue
She keeps killing them, one by one. The escalator is narrow, allowing only a few zombies to ascend at once, and gradually, An Ran dispatches nearly ten of them.
She feels a bit tired; she has never killed so many zombies in one go before, surpassing her previous record for a single encounter. Wiping the sweat from her forehead, she looks at her nurse's uniform, now a dark, bloody mess, making it hard to distinguish the original pink color. After a moment of quiet, she returns to her hospital room, waiting for the zombies on the escalator to lose interest.
Given the situation, it seems there is a significant security flaw on the third floor, so An Ran decides to change her plan of heading to the sixth floor and instead focus on the third. She plans to rest for a bit before calling Hu Zhen down to help clear the zombies on the fourth floor. Otherwise, if she gradually lures the zombies from the third floor to the fourth, there will be a pile of zombie corpses on the fourth floor, leaving no room to maneuver.
However, before An Ran can go to the fifth floor to find Hu Zhen, Hu Zhen comes down herself with some food. She places a pile of biscuits and cooked food onto An Ran's bed and asks An Ran, who is dirty and smelly, "It’s already been bright for a while. I haven’t seen you come up. Have you eaten?"
"I ate. Since you two haven’t woken up this morning, I took some food myself," An Ran replies while lying on the bed. She rummages through the pile of supplies Hu Zhen has brought and pulls out a bag of egg yolk pies. She tears it open and begins to stuff her mouth while asking, “What about Chen Jiao? Is she still sleeping?”
“Looking for supplies on the fifth floor.” Hu Zhen pulls a chair next to An Ran's bed. Watching her eat, she sighs and says, “You two need to stop arguing. I shared a lot with Chen Jiao last night. It seems we’re the only ones alive in this hospital. We should unite, take care of the kids, and hold out for rescue.”
“Still waiting for rescue?” An Ran swallows the last bite of the egg yolk pie and looks at Hu Zhen with a hint of sarcasm. “I’ve lost all hope of rescue. If there were a chance, they would have already come. And even if help arrives, there is no phone signal. How could we send news about this hospital and the few of us who are alive?”
Deep down, An Ran harbors a small fantasy about her ex-husband, wishing that Zhan Lian would remember their past and come to save her. But she knows that is unrealistic.
Hu Zhen’s expression falters as he absorbs her words. “Then what do you think we should do?”
“Of course, we need to plan to get out of here. Look around; our food supply is dwindling. Soon, we’ll have nothing left. We have to find something to eat.” An Ran finishes off the egg yolk pie in a couple of bites, sits up, and gestures to Hu Zhen. “My car is parked in the basement, and it has a full tank of gas. If we can get the kids to the basement, I can drive us out!”
An Ran is reluctant to leave the hospital unless absolutely necessary. She is familiar with the layout and has the advantage of geography, allowing her to effectively deal with zombies. Plus, she has a bed to sleep on and a quilt to cover her, avoiding the elements outside.
