Chapter 647: Open the Door
After all, they were just two grown men. Being able to pull those children out of the chaos was already remarkable—who still had the strength to comfort crying kids at a time like this?
“Wait…” An Ran, sitting at the edge of the bed, suddenly looked uneasy.
Zhao Ru and Liu Shasha quickly leaned closer. “What’s wrong?”
“I just saw another Yun Tao on the first floor.”
An Ran tilted her head, focusing again on the Yun Tao who’d gone up to the seventh floor—he was still there, knocking on doors, telling everyone not to open up.
Meanwhile, the Yun Tao in the first-floor lobby was rescuing people—saving children. Two Yun Taos. Which one was real? Which was fake?
At the moment, both of them were acting perfectly normal. There was nothing suspicious in either of their actions.
Another group of people burst out of the first floor, fighting and fleeing up the stairs. Leading the chase was a woman, sobbing as she ran from the first floor all the way up to the fourth, pounding on the conference room door, but no one inside opened it.
Just then, an elevator arrived. She rushed inside, and when it stopped on the fifth floor, she stumbled out, crying and trembling as she went from door to door, pounding desperately—until she reached An Ran’s room.
Seeing the pursuers closing in, Liu Shasha pressed her face to the peephole, hopping anxiously. “An Ran, An Ran, I think she’s real! That woman looks so helpless—shouldn’t we open the door and save her?!”
Before An Ran could reply, the door across the hall suddenly opened. The bloodstained woman darted inside. Before An Ran’s plants could reach in to probe, the door slammed shut, and a group of men with knives came charging up, kicking the opposite door hard.
“Bitch! Open the door!”
The man in front looked like he bore a deep, personal hatred toward the woman—determined to kill her no matter what.
Several others, already lost to bloodlust, began kicking at An Ran’s door as well. They weren’t only targeting her—every door in the hallway got a few kicks—but since An Ran’s room was directly opposite the woman’s, she took the brunt of it.
“Can you shut the hell up?! I’m only after that whore!”
The man hunting the woman turned on the others who’d joined in the rampage. The two groups weren’t together—one wanted revenge, the other simply wanted to kill. Within moments, the hallway exploded into another violent clash.
“Which side are the good guys? Which are the bad?” Liu Shasha stared through the peephole at the carnage outside, face pale with confusion and fear. Then she turned to Zhao Ru and An Ran, blurting her judgment: “I think that guy chasing the woman has to be the bad one. Killing a woman like that—he’s horrible.”
“Not necessarily.” An Ran gave her a faint, ironic smile. “Didn’t you hear him say she was sleeping around? Maybe he’s someone she hurt before.”
“Whatever their problem is, it’s none of our business,” Zhao Ru said sharply from her seat at the vanity. “You’ve survived nearly a year in the apocalypse, yet you were still thinking of opening the door just now? You really haven’t learned a thing.”
“I—” Liu Shasha’s expression stiffened, a flicker of indignation crossing her face. She muttered, “I’ve never run into something like this before. How was I supposed to know what to do?”
