Chapter 62: I Won't Be Violent with Her
After a while, Hu Zhen returns from the fourth floor with two fruit knives. She hands them to An Ran with a smile. "Pregnant women nowadays love fruit. I look around and find these two knives. There are also some peeling knives that haven’t been used. The scalpels need to stay in the operating room, and surgical scissors aren’t as easy to handle as fruit knives. Take these for emergencies. I’ll keep looking for more."
An Ran takes the two fruit knives from Hu Zhen and weighs them in her hand, appreciating her thoughtfulness. She has only focused on the food on the fourth floor, so her eyes light up as she smiles at Hu Zhen. "These are better than the expensive fruit knives you bought!"
"Of course, my fruit knife was only 9.9 yuan," Hu Zhen replies, also smiling. As she watches An Ran skillfully pull out one of the knives, she sighs. "To be honest, my family's money has been depleted for me to undergo IVF these past few years. My husband and I have had to be very frugal to have a child."
The atmosphere suddenly grows heavy. After hearing Hu Zhen's words, An Ran doesn’t know what to say. Unlike her, who has stumbled into the Northwest and ended up pregnant after a few encounters with her ex-husband, many people desperately want to have a child but face countless difficulties. After finally getting pregnant and giving birth, she has lost the child just as easily.
This despair is unspeakable, and An Ran begins to understand Hu Zhen a little better. Hu Zhen is truly trying hard to stay positive.
"Don't dwell on it; I don't want to think about it anymore," Hu Zhen says, cheering herself up first. She smiles at An Ran, sniffing slightly. “The supplies on the fourth floor have almost been cleaned out by Chen Jiao. Let’s do our best!”
“She cleaned out the supplies?” An Ran doesn’t quite understand at first, repeating Hu Zhen’s words, then asks, “So is she sharing with us?”
Hu Zhen hesitates, looking a bit embarrassed. "You know Chen Jiao. She probably thinks that whoever finds the supplies gets to keep them, so she takes hers, and we take ours."
Upon hearing this, An Ran nearly brandishes the fruit knife and charges downstairs to stab Chen Jiao a few times. She has killed the zombies and cleared the fourth floor, yet Chen Jiao has done nothing and is trying to monopolize all the supplies? In these times, even a little food is a matter of life and death.
With that thought in mind, An Ran grips the two fruit knives and turns toward the safety staircase. Hu Zhen hurriedly grabs her arm. "Wait, don’t argue with her. She can be a bit unreasonable, but we don’t need to fight. Besides, she hasn’t said she wants to monopolize the food. We can still get supplies from her. If you're not happy with how things are distributed, just talk to her."
"I won’t be violent with her, don’t worry." An Ran shakes off Hu Zhen’s hand, pushes open the safety door, and enters the stairs, her expression stern as she heads to the fourth floor.
Hu Zhen’s comments strike her as amusing; Chen Jiao has done nothing to earn the supplies. Why should An Ran be the one asking her for food? An Ran has eliminated all the zombies on this floor; if anyone should be negotiating, it should be Chen Jiao asking her for supplies, not the other way around.
Stepping over the corpses of zombies on the ground, An Ran kicks open the door to Chen Jiao's ward. Behind her, Hu Zhen rushes to follow, anxious about a potential confrontation between An Ran and Chen Jiao.
