Chapter 587: Found
Chapter 587: Found
“This—!” Lei Jiang’s eyes widened. His mind raced through several possibilities before settling on one: this was a mutated iron tree.
A mutated iron tree? In weather this cold—and yet a mutated iron tree had appeared?
“Found him.” A woman’s voice sounded softly. A woman in the hotel waitress uniform turned a corner and stood in front of Lei Jiang, smiling at him. “I said he would be here.”
“An Ran?” Lei Jiang turned and looked at the woman who had slipped in, and a bad feeling rose in his chest. “How did you get in here?”
“Zhou Zheng helped us sneak in.” An Ran smiled, baring her teeth. She was pushing a serving cart; the cloth beneath it twitched and a small hand reached out, followed by the indistinct babbling of Doll.
Seeing An Ran’s beaming face, Lei Jiang’s heart sank. He frowned, slid both hands into his suit pockets, and said, “You came for me today?”
“What else? With nothing better to do, risking this freezing weather to go out for a stroll?”
“An Ran, we don’t have any real hatred between us, do we?”
Lei Jiang did not run. He knew that for An Ran to dress like this, sneak into the hotel, and bring a child with her, she could not have come alone—Zhan Lian was surely backing her.
So Lei Jiang decided to reason with her.
As for whatever grievance he and An Ran might have had, it was never anything mortal—back at the start of the apocalypse, when they were still inexperienced, he had treated a wood-type ability user as if she were a unique treasure. For a time, Lei Jiang had pursued An Ran relentlessly, convinced he had to have her.
But that was only a phase. After An Ran joined up with Zhan Lian and Lei Jiang learned that wood-type users weren’t so rare, he let go of his stubborn fixation on her and turned his attention to other wood-type ability users.
So even if he once entertained some vicious plan against An Ran, he had never acted on it. At most, they had a past quarrel—hardly grounds for deadly hatred.
Why, then, did An Ran have to come trailing him with her family in tow?
“You shouldn’t be asking me that. You should ask Zhang Boxun.” An Ran bent down, picked Doll—who had been playing in the cart—into her arms.
Behind her stepped a man wearing the hotel’s male server uniform—exactly the Zhang Boxun she’d named.
Lei Jiang’s expression changed. He spun to run, but had barely gone a short distance when Zhan Lian and Luo Feifan slipped out and blocked his path. They too wore hotel staff outfits.
“Zhang Boxun, if you kill me, then you’ll never get any news about Tang Siluo.” He shouted, looking back at Zhang Boxun with a trace of desperation in his face.
At the sound of Tang Siluo’s name, Zhang Boxun’s handsome features flickered for an instant, then a heavy weariness swept over his face. He took a step toward Lei Jiang and said in a low voice, “I’m not killing you to save anyone, and not to get anyone’s news. Do you remember Axe? The one you secretly shot from a distance?—one life for another, Lei Jiang.”
They had been moving around inside the Grand Fortune for several days. Had they not brought An Ran and Doll here today, they would never have expected to find Lei Jiang so quickly. If, as Chen Chaofa had said, they are withdrawing to Jinmen Base, then today's opportunity to kill Lei Jiang could not be missed.
