Chapter 578: Just a Fraud, Isn’t She?
"Sister, what's wrong with you?"
Liu Shasha, standing nearby, noticed Liu Zhi staring blankly into the distance and called out curiously. Following her gaze, she saw An Ran holding Doll, stepping through the villa gate. Her slender figure disappeared behind the iron fence.
Liu Shasha nudged Liu Zhi gently. Liu Zhi blinked, frowning as she muttered in confusion, "This An Ran… she seems to hold a high position in Fatty’s team."
"Her? Isn’t she just a swindler?" At that, Liu Shasha couldn’t hold back. She told Liu Zhi about how An Ran had once sat in a wheelchair and pretended to have a broken leg to trick her. After finishing, she added, "Sister, honestly, this Hexi gang’s leader really reminds me of those criminal gangs before the apocalypse. You know, the ones who’d send old folks, kids, and women out to beg. Sis, are you sure our family really wants to move here and join them?"
"You’re still young. There’s a lot you don’t understand." Liu Zhi sighed.
In truth, people who survived in the north tended to be much more simple-hearted, because there had been no large-scale corpse transformation there. Unlike in the south, where an entire city might leave behind only a handful of survivors, the dual pressure of survival and scarce resources hadn’t pushed northern people to extremes.
Liu Shasha was lucky. When the apocalypse came, few in the Liu family turned into corpses—only some elderly who were bedridden. In those early days, they hadn’t suffered much. They survived through mutual support, and most of them awakened abilities.
So Liu Shasha didn’t truly understand that, in chaotic times, people like Fatty were often the ones most likely to endure.
If… hypothetically, Fatty truly possessed something the world coveted, then leading a group like this, wrapped in the guise of swindlers and cheats, only made them look more despicable on the surface—while concealing unfathomable depths within.
And all the signs so far suggested that Fatty might indeed have something like that.
As the evening drew on, the onlookers in the open square gradually dispersed in pairs and trios, whispering among themselves. Fatty had sent men to take away eight of the motorcycles, leaving the ninth for An Ran.
Liu Zhi remained suspicious, but unlike last time, she didn’t march over to confront Fatty directly. She knew that even if she asked, she wouldn’t get any real answer. If she wanted to find out the truth, she’d have to join Fatty’s team. Moving into the villa complex was the first step.
Just as she returned home to discuss the matter with her brothers, the clear skies over Yaoyang Base suddenly shifted. By evening, the wind picked up sharply—not snow this time, but a biting, icy gale.
An Ran’s villa had at last stopped suffering from constant blackouts. But with the windmill blades outside frozen solid, there was no chance of generating electricity.
Fortunately, they had firewood. Yun Tao kept the stove blazing, and everyone huddled around it, roasting sweet potatoes.
Doll was ecstatic. She stood on the sofa, her little hands gripping the backrest as Little Mint fed her pieces of sweet potato. She took bite after bite, her cheeks bulging, and still asked for more.
An Ran sat in front of the child, shielding her so she wouldn’t fall. Suddenly, she turned and pinched the toddler’s plump calf.
"Eat less! If you keep this up, you’ll end up growing into that Fatty’s figure!"
