Chapter 555: No One Should Interfere
An Ran had just finished tidying up after a long, busy day when she heard Zhao Ru’s question. Only then did she realize she hadn’t seen Luo Feifan for a while. She wanted him to roast some corn, but he was nowhere to be found.
“I heard he went to meet the soldiers guarding the base to build some connections.” It was Liang Ziyu who answered.
He couldn’t hold back any longer. Craving roasted corn, he grabbed some newspaper, tore it into strips, crumpled it into balls, then picked up two stones and started knocking them together, hoping to spark a flame.
In Little Mint’s arms, Doll pointed at the stones in Liang Ziyu’s hand and babbled, “Aa…”
“Do you think this snow will freeze all the monsters to death?” An Ran had a sudden, wild thought.
Standing by the French window and looking out at the thick blanket of snow, she felt it might be possible. Wasn’t there a saying that heavy snow promised a good harvest? Since they had left Xiangcheng, they hadn’t run into any massive mutant swarms capable of stopping them. Could it be that the Doomsday Virus itself was being frozen out?
If so, that would be an excellent sign. Once the snow stopped, humanity would no longer have a rival. They could regroup, restore order, and rebuild society under proper laws.
Zhao Ru, still curled up on the sofa, said nothing. She shared An Ran’s hope, of course, but the future was uncertain. Perhaps the monsters would freeze to death, yes—but perhaps humanity would perish in the cold before the snow ever ended.
In fact, the base’s leaders didn’t care much about Fatty and his group. As Chen Chaofa had put it, just providing them with a roof over their heads was already doing them a favor. No one was going to worry about their survival. These days, everyone fended for themselves—why waste energy on others?
An Ran quietly agreed. Fine then. Let’s just keep our distance and stop interfering with each other. That would be best.
Luo Feifan finally came back in the middle of the night, but the news he brought wasn’t encouraging.
This base carried the atmosphere of people living only for the present. The leader, Wu Simiao, had once been the heir of the richest man in the north. Before the apocalypse, his father’s fortune had practically fueled the city’s economy. When disaster struck, he had used his wealth and influence to rally his company’s staff and defend the city, eventually establishing the base.
But the richest man had passed away a few months ago, leaving Wu Simiao in charge.
Compared to the south, survival rates in the north were much higher. More than half the city’s people hadn’t turned into zombies, making conditions far better than in the south.
But with the unrelenting cold, Wu Simiao cared less about leadership than about maintaining his lavish lifestyle. Real power had already slipped into the hands of Chen Chaofa, a recent defector to the base.
Chen Chaofa, backed by a strong military background and family ties—an elder roughly the same age as Tang Jianjun who had served in the army—was nothing like Tang Jianjun, who had been left with only a hollow command. On the contrary, Chen had many surviving troops and had grown into a formidable power.
Thus, Chen Chaofa had been sent here to negotiate the merger with Wu Simiao.
