Chapter 554: What is a Safe Zone?
Zhan Lian patted his chest, speaking with confidence.
An Ran looked forward to it. After all, if Zhan Lian said it could be done, it would be done. After so many years of marriage, she still had faith in him.
After fixing the sheets, An Ran opened the bedroom cabinet to look through the rest of the items.
Yaoyang Base seemed to have been built on the ruins of a city, with a newly constructed wall enclosing it. Many of the villas in this area still held plenty of daily necessities that had not been taken away.
Of course, the food had long since been cleared out by the base, but things like sheets, quilts, clothes, and small appliances—too many and too troublesome to carry off—had been left behind in the villas.
The one An Ran and her group had chosen was a two-and-a-half-story building. The first floor even had a garage, just big enough for Zhan Lian’s converted RV. The rooftop had a small garden with a translucent roof. The flowers and plants had long since withered, but the pots remained.
An Ran planted the meat flower’s crystal core in a tall pot and guided the fat thorn ball into the small garden, letting it roam as it pleased.
The second floor held the bedrooms. Two of them had been combined into a large dressing room. The walls had been decorated to extend the space, so if one stayed on the first floor, it would likely be overlooked.
Several quilts had been left untucked inside, used as sleeping pads. An Ran’s group had more than enough space. They also found a number of fur coats and countless pairs of high heels. But these were useless—who would wear high heels in the apocalypse?
There seemed to have been a child in the house too, but all the clothes were for a boy. An Ran planned to ask the women downstairs, who were chatting with Zhao Ru, to come up and move the boy’s clothes. She would see if anyone at Fatty’s place had a use for them.
“What did people here rely on to survive?” Packing up the clothes in the cloakroom, An Ran knelt on the floor, looking over at Zhan Lian, who had come in to help, and asked casually.
“I heard the base has quite a few elemental ability users,” Zhan Lian replied. “Each one is given a task, and the base provides for them. At the same time, each one gets three slots in the safe zone.”
“What’s a safe zone?”
“It’s in the heart of Hedong—the safest area. They call it the safe zone. It’s that Grand Rich Hotel.” Zhan Lian squatted beside An Ran, tilting his head and chuckling. “We probably won’t get the chance to enter. We don’t have any elemental ability users here.”
“Yeah, we’re just ordinary people.” An Ran pursed her lips and smiled.
Her rapport with Zhan Lian was growing stronger. Many things didn’t need to be said aloud; they understood each other naturally.
By dawn, everyone had prepared their resting places.
By the time dawn approached, everyone had already finished arranging their own resting spots. Fatty sent over a few people carrying several bags of corn. Luo Feifan wasn’t around, and Zhan Lian had already climbed over the wall to fetch supplies.
“Huh? Where did Luo Feifan go?” Zhao Ru sat on the sofa, staring at the baskets of corn in front of her. She was too lazy to move. Her fingers were numb in the freezing cold, and she had only the strength to speak.
Outside the French window, snow continued to fall. The drifts had already piled up to half the height of the window. If it kept up like this, the base would be buried in a blizzard.
