Chapter 552: No One Will Believe You’re Without Some Special Abilities
Because everyone supposedly had “no” abilities, the registrars couldn’t be bothered to continue. Who cared what their names were, what backgrounds they had—without abilities they were just a burden.
While An Ran was tidying up her villa, several groups of women came over. They sat on the leather sofas and complained about the inhumanity of the base.
Zhao Ru, bundled up like a bear, sat on the sofa and chatted with the women.
An Ran, not wanting to hear any of it, asked Little Mint to look after Doll while she cleaned the room before it was completely dark.
At that moment, in distant Hedong, amidst the raging snow, a brightly lit five-star hotel was filled with singing and dancing, giving off a sense of peace and prosperity. On a brightly lit stage, several long-legged beauties in bunny costumes danced. Offstage, a group of high-ranking officials sat at a table playing cards and rolling dice. Piles of crystal cores gleamed on the tabletops. Many people stood behind their respective superiors, silently cheering them on.
Someone hurried in and spoke to a man in a suit with slicked-back hair at the card table. The man’s face was somewhat nonchalant as he nodded and casually replied: “Just settle them down. Don’t worry about them. Who would believe they could make it all the way from the south to here without some skill?”
Even if they were truly incompetent, in this survival-of-the-fittest environment, they would just die. Weren’t there already enough people dying in this world?
The messenger paused. It was the soldier who had given An Ran a packet of biscuits. Seeing that the suited high-ranking official at the base genuinely had no intention of caring about those 600 or so poor souls, he responded and retreated.
Just as he walked out the door, another man in a suit caught up with him. He stopped him and asked, “Zhou Zheng, I heard a group of troublemakers arrived at our base?”
The soldier named Zhou Zheng wore a large-eared military cap. His face was red from the cold, and his skin was rough. He looked quite ordinary.
He turned around, nodded at the man named Jiang Peng, and replied seriously, “They’re just ordinary people: the old, the weak, the sick, the pregnant, men, women, young and old.”
“Then how did they get from the south to the north?” Jiang Peng smiled at Zhou Zheng. His eyes were hard to read, but his expression carried nosy curiosity.
The straightforward Zhou Zheng had no idea what Jiang Peng meant by the question. Under the bright light, he shook his head and replied honestly: “I heard they weren’t originally from the same group. They were abandoned by their respective teams along the way, and then they gathered together and arrived at the tunnel very early. It took them many days to dig through the tunnel. It was just luck.”
How could it not be luck? The bitter cold was unbearable, enough to make one want to die in minutes, yet it was precisely this cruel weather that kept the terrifying creatures from emerging. Only then could these people manage to walk from the south all the way to the north.
“Is there anyone named Zhan Lian in their team? And someone named An Ran?” Jiang Peng continued to inquire.
Zhou Zheng thought for a moment and shook his head. He happened to be holding a stack of registration forms in his hand, which he was about to show to the big boss. However, the big boss was busy playing cards. When he asked, there were no elemental ability users among the 600 people, so he hadn’t even bothered to look.
Even so, Jiang Peng still went through Zhou Zheng’s stack of registration forms. He flipped through them, but didn’t see Zhan Lian’s or An Ran’s names. He breathed a sigh of relief, then felt something was wrong. Shaking the registration forms in his hand, he asked, “There are only a few dozen forms here. There aren’t over 600 people, are there?”
