Chapter 551: Yaoyang Base
Chapter 551: Yaoyang Base
Even though the registration staff despised them, from a humanitarian standpoint they couldn’t simply watch over six hundred people freeze to death beneath the city walls. They took only a few clean, unopened, high-end duvets from the group and arranged for them to stay in the villa complex at the foot of the wall.
"That’s it for now. It’s cold, and our supplies are limited. Please take care of yourselves. We don’t have any extra food. Giving you shelter is already a special permission from our leader."
The base personnel looked impatiently at Fatty and the others, their eyes half-lidded. They couldn’t understand where these useless people had come from. It had been over half a year since the apocalypse—how could a group with no real abilities have survived until now?
The senior leaders were compassionate enough to accept these “extra mouths,” but that was the extent of their kindness. Supplies were already scarce, and no one could afford to feed such a burden. All they could hope was that the villa complex wouldn’t be filled with corpses after the snowfall.
Fatty grinned broadly, though he was muttering curses inside. Outwardly, he bowed his head, smiling gratefully, and led the elderly, the weak, the sick, the disabled, and the pregnant women—all wrapped in quilts—into the villa complex, empty-handed.
The cars? Leave them to freeze outside. They weren’t allowed to be driven into the base, and no one inside would bother trying to help them get in.
An Ran and the others, who were still hiding their own supplies, were left behind. But because they followed Fatty, the base workers lumped them in as part of the burden and carelessly shoved them into the villa complex as well.
The villa complex stood directly below the city wall. When the wall had first been built, it was erected right along the edge of the area. Few people lived there; the place was full of frozen, dead trees and abandoned houses.
Fatty had already picked out a few random villas to occupy. They looked long vacant, and no one at the base cared what happened to them anyway—just a bunch of encumbrances.
By the time An Ran and her group entered the villas, it was already the next morning. Luo Feifan had spent the night talking with the registration staff, even slipping them a few packs of crystal cores, in exchange for opening a slightly wider gate so their vehicles could be brought inside.
Gradually, everyone began to understand the situation. The villa complex was isolated from the main base by a frozen river, which split the settlement into two halves: east and west.
The eastern section housed long-term residents of the base—locals or those with special abilities. The western section, where An Ran and Fatty had been placed, was reserved for newcomers: people who had just arrived, those with fevers who hadn’t had their temperatures checked yet, or anyone who needed monitoring.
This base was called Yaoyang Base.
In the middle of a blizzard, the name sounded almost ironic. Hexi was a barren wasteland with terrible living conditions. The base provided no food or supplies; people left here either succumbed to fever and became zombies, or else froze or starved to death.
It was clear no one at Yaoyang Base cared about people like An Ran or Fatty. To the base, they were just a burden. Giving them a place to die was already considered a mercy.
As for the questions on the registration forms—such as whether they had abilities and what type—Fatty had already given strict orders: everyone must answer, “No abilities!!!”
