Chapter 53 Zombies can't talk
Anran's restlessness makes her seem a bit neurotic, but for someone who has experienced such drastic changes—the entire world turning into monsters— and still managing to act normally—this just shows her remarkable psychological resilience.
Anran knows her current actions resemble those of a madwoman. Although she doesn’t understand what surrounding Doll and Chen Jiao’s son with potted plants accomplishes, it makes her feel comfortable. She thinks placing the children among the flowers makes them safe.
After finding a new home for Doll and Chen Jiao's son, Anran takes advantage of the children’s sleeping to head to the fourth floor and deal with the zombies. She slowly approaches the door of Hu Zhen's ward and knocks gently.
There is no response inside, and Anran dares not knock loudly. Though she has dispatched several zombies in the hallway, a few still linger behind the nurses' station. She has no idea what awaits her around the corner; zombies seem to be emerging continuously.
Pressing her ear to Hu Zhen's ward door, she turns the handle, but it is locked.
"Open the door, I'm Anran from bed 16!" she calls softly, glancing at the zombies in the distance that begin to shuffle toward her. Anran holds her breath and times her escape. If the door remains shut for more than five seconds, the first zombie will reach her side.
Just as she finishes speaking, she hears the doorknob turning from inside the room, but a female voice interrupts the attempt to open the door.
“Don’t open it! There are zombies outside; this must be a trap! Bed 16 has already been eaten by zombies!”
That is Chen Jiao. Anran raises her eyebrows in surprise. When has Chen Jiao returned to the fourth floor? Does she really think zombies can talk, or is she deliberately refusing to open the door for her?
"Zombies can't talk!" Hu Zhen exclaims, ready to turn the doorknob. It seems Chen Jiao again tries to stop her, and a heated argument erupts between them.
Suddenly, Anran turns around and stabs a zombie behind her with a pair of scissors. She then knocks forcefully on the door, shouting, "Chen Jiao, open the door! Do you still want your son? I found him! If you don't let me in, I’ll throw your son to the zombies!"
For a moment, there is silence behind the door. Chen Jiao doesn’t respond, but Anran can see several zombies attracted by her voice. She quickly retreats, watching the nearby zombies rush toward the ward door. Anran kills one zombie and stealthily follows another to continue her assault.
"Anran, where is my son? Did you find him?"
From inside, a scuffle breaks out, followed by a series of rustling noises. Amidst the sounds attracting the zombies, Hu Zhen shouts, and Anran, behind the door surrounded by zombies, continues to fight without acknowledging her.
Inside the room, Hu Zhen, now able to stand and move, argues with Chen Jiao. The wound on her abdomen clearly still pains her, making her appear somewhat powerless against Chen Jiao's obstruction.
“That Anran from bed 16 is cunning; don’t you think she’s trying to trick us into opening the door so she can eat all our food? Don’t forget, she once forced me to jump off a building with a knife!” Chen Jiao’s voice comes through the door.
