Chapter 513: Don’t Hold Me Down
“He went ahead to look for Zhang Boxun.”
Further ahead, past the airport, lay Huang County. Beyond Huang County, one would officially leave Xiangcheng. Between the next village, township, and town on the Beijing–Tibet Expressway stretched a long, winding mountain road. The corpses found along the way were all Lei Jiang’s men—clear evidence that Zhang Boxun had been tracking him closely.
At the same time, Lei Jiang had been hiding well, never allowing Zhang Boxun to catch up.
Luo Feifan was worried. After all, he had watched Zhang Boxun and Tang Silo grow up. So he went ahead, hoping to lend a hand.
“Oh.” An Ran, sitting in the passenger seat with her legs crossed, nodded and looked out the window.
There were no streetlights along the way. Without the bright headlights ahead, only the moonlight would have lit the road.
At the wheel, Zhan Lian smiled, one hand turning the steering wheel while the other reached out to take An Ran’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. Then he ruffled her short hair, tilted her head toward his shoulder, and made her lean against him.
He forced her to rest there.
“What are you doing? Just drive.” An Ran sat back up, nudged Zhan Lian, and added, “Are you tired? If so, I’ll drive for a while.”
“No. You should get some sleep. If Zhan Anxin wakes up, you won’t be able to sleep again.”
With that, Zhan Lian tilted her head back to his shoulder again, quickly leaned over to kiss her forehead, and then pressed her head down to stop her from moving.
“Okay, okay, don’t hold me down. I’ll sleep in the back.” An Ran, forced into “rest” against her will, sighed helplessly.
She unbuckled her seatbelt and tried to move to the back seat to sleep with Little Mint. But Zhan Lian didn’t let her. He grabbed her hand, keeping her in place.
“Then don’t sleep. Talk to me, or I’ll doze off while driving.”
She had already offered to drive when she saw he was getting tired! An Ran glared at the stubborn man beside her, realizing he wasn’t worried about her sleep at all—he just wanted company so he wouldn’t be bored.
What a scoundrel.
So she stayed put, pushing his head back to face forward. “Fine, I’ll stay here. Keep your eyes on the road so we don’t hit anything. So… what do you want to talk about? Hmm… Where are we going now? Straight to the capital?”
“I don’t know. We’ll find a safe place first, then stop and build an impenetrable house with a forest around it.”
An Ran smiled, nodded, and replied sweetly, “Okay.”
It was a good idea. Everyone agreed, though whether it could be realized remained to be seen.
The car continued forward.
After a few hours, dawn broke.
Once past Huang County, they officially left Hunan Province. The roadside was lush with trees, and endless hills rolled along both sides of the national highway. Though the trip wasn’t entirely without trouble, it was generally safe.
An Ran, still in the passenger seat, grew drowsy and drifted into a half-sleep.
When she awoke, she saw in her mind’s eye—some ten kilometers ahead—two vehicles on the road. One was stuck at the roadside, its wheel wedged into concrete and immovable.
Inside sat Zhang Boxun, barely breathing. Beneath the wheels lay the body of Axe.
In the car behind was Luo Feifan, who had just arrived. He got out, scanned the surroundings, then crouched beside Axe to check for breath. After a moment, he shook his head, stood, smashed open Zhang Boxun’s door, and lifted him out.
