Chapter 46 Don't Cry
Chapter 46 Don't Cry
After selecting her weapons, Anran returns to the hallway on the fifth floor, feeling more at ease. She focuses on calming the two children. However, she feels frustrated—Doll acts like a little spirit. Chen Jiao’s son is manageable; as long as he is fed, he will sleep for one to two hours without fuss. But her own baby, once lulled to sleep, wakes up immediately upon being laid down!
After finally lulling Doll to sleep and setting her down, Anran wants to take a moment to rest. But she knows Doll won’t give her much time. So, as soon as Doll is asleep, Anran dashes out of the inner passage, scissors in hand, ready to take down a zombie.
The quicker she kills the zombies, the less noise they make. The zombies seem to focus on the source of sound for only about ten seconds. If there are no continuous noises, they easily lose their interest.
However, zombies are constantly evolving. After surviving in the midst of zombies for so many days, Anran can discern some differences. Some zombies maintain their focus on the sound source for longer than ten seconds, while others disperse quickly. Some react faster to Anran's attacks, while others seem dazed, not reacting at all when she stabs them in the brain.
It seems that the zombies are getting stronger, but the rate of this strengthening varies among individuals. Meanwhile, the difficulties she faced increases steadily, and this hospital is clearly not a place they can stay for long.
Reaching the door of the hallway, Anran dispatches a few zombies that have followed her. She then picks up a large plastic bag from the feet of one zombie near the door and runs back into the hallway.
As soon as she enters the lounge, she hears Doll crying. Indeed, Doll belongs to that category of babies who wake up as soon as they are laid down. Anran recalls reading somewhere that such babies lack a sense of security and need adults to hold them constantly.
With a sigh, she sets down the plastic bag and picks up the crying baby from the bed. Anran laments the harsh reality of survival in the apocalypse, especially with a baby who needs constant reassurance.
Playing with an unopened pacifier in her hand, Anran notices her baby is full. She lays Doll down in the crib, but sure enough, Doll starts crying within two minutes. Anran hurriedly opens the pacifier and puts it in Doll’s mouth.
Doll sucks on the pacifier, grumbles a couple of times in dissatisfaction, and then quietly falls asleep.
"A magical artifact!"
Anran feels like crying tears of joy. Although experts say that pacifiers can have mixed effects on children and it is best not to use them to avoid future problems, what age is it now? The outside world is crawling with zombies, and she has to consider the practical situation—keeping her insecure baby from crying is the top priority.
