Chapter 450: A Man Can Be Killed but Not Humiliated
“I’ll go get my wife first,” Zhan Lian says, opening the door.
Holding Doll in his sling, he steps directly onto a mutant vine. The vine rises like a snake, lifting him into the air. Supporting himself with one hand, Zhan Lian flips over, suspended in midair, and steps onto the road made of tangled vines.
A vine stretches toward Doll. With a flick of his hand, a small metalen helmet appears on Doll’s head—yes, real metal. Then Doll’s entire body becomes encased in legendary metal-threaded armor—adorably pudgy in size.
A spinning knife flies out, slicing the incoming vines like a blender.
Zhan Lian quickly reaches the overturned car. He opens the door and pulls out An Ran, who is still punching someone inside.
When the vines try to close in, a metalen wall shoots up around him, blocking them and clearing a safe space.
“Zhan Lian!”
An Ran, still sitting on the ground, hears Doll’s laughter and looks up. When she sees who pulls her out—Zhan Lian—she can’t hold back anymore. Her eyes turn red, and tears finally fall.
“Don’t cry. I’m here now.” Zhan Lian smiles and gently wipes her tears with his fingertips.
An Ran nods, grabs his arm, and stands up with his help.
Nearby, Wang Wei climbs out through the car door and reaches a hand toward Xu Lier. “Lili, come on—come out.”
Xu Lier, her makeup a mess, huddles in the corner. “I’m scared, A’wei… I’m too scared. The vines… they’re everywhere.”
The world outside is nothing but vines, writhing like serpents. The smell of gasoline hangs thick in the air.
Behind Wang Wei, two python-like vines sway menacingly. It’s terrifying.
Xu Lier is paralyzed with fear. She doesn’t dare move.
Zhang Boxun, meanwhile, kicks open the car door and crawls out. As he reaches for the ground, Zhan Lian—intentionally or not—steps on the back of his hand.
Zhang Boxun frowns but doesn’t resist. Still on his knees, he lets Zhan Lian press him into the dirt.
For a soldier, this is open humiliation. Climbing out of the front seat only to kneel and be stepped on like this.
But Zhang Boxun says nothing. No anger, no protest.
Instead, he reaches out with his free hand, gripping Zhan Lian’s ankle and trying to move his foot away.
Zhan Lian only presses harder, grinding his heel into the back of Zhang Boxun’s hand.
Axe, having just climbed out, sees this and rushes forward.
“Zhan Lian! A man can be killed, but not humiliated!” he shouts. “You’re a soldier too. If you want revenge, then kill us. But don’t treat your comrades like this!”
Zhan Lian waves his hand and shoves Axe back two steps. He lifts his foot from Zhang Boxun’s hand, his eyes cold and sharp.
“Your wife gets kidnapped, and you’re still grinning like an idiot? A soldier can be killed but not humiliated? What you did today was a humiliation to me!”
Just stepping on Zhang Boxun’s hand? That’s already letting him off easy.
