Chapter 40: Saline Solution
Chapter 40: Saline Solution
Hu Zhen’s child is likely eaten by zombies. Although the blue light room is dark, Anran has carefully checked Doll zombies she has dealt with. None of them have Hu Zhen’s name on their wristbands. Out of all the newborns in the fifth-floor nursery, only Doll and Chen Jiao’s son have survived. Therefore, it is clear what has happened to Hu Zhen’s child.
Anran doesn’t know whether telling Hu Zhen that her child has turned into a zombie or been eaten by zombies would be less painful.
She only knows that neither outcome would be good news for Hu Zhen.
Thinking about her next steps, Anran lies on the small bed, on her side to protect the two children as she falls asleep. She sleeps somewhat well, waking up after about an hour due to Doll’s crying. Despite being woken up, she feels satisfied with the amount of sleep she has gotten.
After waking up, Anran feeds Doll, changes her into a clean diaper, and then remembers that Chen Jiao’s son will need milk soon. She carries Doll out of the fifth-floor internal passage, cautiously wandering about.
Although wandering carefully seems contradictory, with the unpredictable nature of things, Anran feels like she is walking in a horror film. In such films, one might encounter ghosts around any corner, so she is naturally cautious while carrying Doll.
The internal passage is narrow, with transparent glass on the left and rooms on the right. Many of these rooms have their doors tightly shut, and none have signs indicating their purpose. Anran tries opening one, and it is dark inside. Using the sunlight streaming in from the window, it seems to contain boxes of medicines.
“Sodium chloride injection?” Anran looks at the label on the box and realizes, “Isn’t this saline solution? Look, Doll, we have something to drink!”
Normal saline solution can be used to mix formula. Although it is cold, warming it in a bottle warmer before mixing it with the formula would be better than starving Chen Jiao’s son.
Moreover, this is just a temporary solution. Anran plans to use it for a couple of days while she figures out a way to find bottled water among the zombies to mix formula for Chen Jiao’s son. The remaining saline solution can be kept for her own use.
With one hand holding the sleeping Doll and the other retrieving a bottle of saline solution from an open box, Anran hurries back to the resting room, places Doll on the bed, and quickly goes to the operating room. She pours the saline solution into a bottle and heats it in the bottle warmer.
A large bottle of saline solution fills half of the milk bottle, which is sufficient since Chen Jiao’s son usually drinks around 100 milliliters of milk. Anran carefully prepares the right amount, treating the remaining saline solution as if it were bottled water for herself.
The bottle warmer has already been moved to the operating room. Perhaps due to the sudden disaster, it is dark outside the hospital by night, with only solar-powered street lights illuminating the surroundings. It seems that there is a large-scale power outage.
