Chapter 39: No Water
Chapter 39: No Water
Lying on the narrow single bed with the two children, Anran suddenly feels incredibly fortunate to have a bed to sleep in. Life is rarely this peaceful, and she could stay here forever if she could.
However, this isn’t realistic!
After a while, before Anran can fall asleep, Chen Jiao's son starts crying again. She feeds him the last bottle of prepared milk but realizes that while there is plenty of formula and diapers, there is no water left.
In the operating room, there is a water purifier mounted on the wall, the kind with a heating function. However, the water it purifies is still a murky brown color—definitely far from clear. It seems that the hospital's water purification system is like this, and regular home water purifiers would be even worse.
Anran doesn’t know if the water source is contaminated, but as a modern person, she wouldn’t dare drink such yellowish, brownish water. Even if adults could risk it, she wouldn’t dare give it to a newborn.
So she needs to go out and find bottled water!
Thinking about bottled water makes her mouth feel dry, and this discomfort frustrates her. To be honest, her current state has already pushed her physical limits. The two children keep crying, wetting, and pooping themselves. She has no time even to close her eyes. Once she finally feeds the children and gets them to sleep, she has to go out and kill zombies to solve the survival crisis.
Her daughter, Doll, can drink her breast milk, but her supply is only enough for Doll. There won’t be enough milk to share with another child, so she has to specifically find bottled water to mix with formula for Chen Jiao’s son.
She isn’t an angel, naturally beautiful, kind, gentle, and affectionate. At best, she is an ordinary person with a narrow view of the world. She doesn’t know why blind fate chose her for marriage. As a worldly person, she has her own practical concerns. Anran wants to survive, just like anyone else.
Because of Chen Jiao’s son, the amount of work she has to do doubles. Taking care of one child is already a chore, and now she has to care for two, especially in the apocalypse. Anyone in her situation would feel irritated!
Besides, Chen Jiao’s son isn’t even her own child. Why should she be responsible for him while Chen Jiao remains indifferent?
But honestly, it is fortunate that Chen Jiao’s son ends up in Anran’s hands. If it were anyone else, would they care about Chen Jiao’s son’s survival in such a dire situation? They would likely have abandoned the child.
While Anran is angry, she still silently gives herself the halo of an angel and continues to take care of the things she needs to do for Chen Jiao’s son. She doesn’t let her frustration affect her work; what can she do? She can’t take out her anger on a two-day-old child.
So, she has to take the two children outside, down to the fourth floor. Her energy is limited, and she can’t afford to be jumping around with the kids while trying to forge a path for survival.
As for Chen Jiao, who is on the rain shelter on the third floor, whether she is up or down or starving in place, who knows? But isn’t there a Hu Zhen on bed 17 on the fourth floor?
