Chapter 353: Don’t Be Afraid
Chapter 353: Don’t Be Afraid
An Ran tells Little Mint to finish the noodle soup and hurries out of the ward. She leans on the stair railing and looks down.
The hall is chaotic. A man is being carried hurriedly to the second floor.
Zhao Ru pinches the man’s arm while guiding him into the operating room.
An Ran frowns, worried. She pulls Liang Ziyu, who is carrying the man, and asks, “What happened to him?”
“He was bitten by a rat,” Liang Ziyu says hurriedly as she carries the man upstairs.
An Ran steps down two steps and sees Zhan Lian and Yun Tao standing outside the hall door.
She doesn’t need to look twice to feel shocked. Outside the door are huge rats—each as big as a cat. They pack densely from the street all the way to the gate. A firewall is set up outside the door. Some of the big rats have broken through the firewall, while others burn to death on the outside. Luo Feifan is in charge of setting up the firewall, and Zhan Lian handles the rats that break through.
No wonder An Ran feels it is already dark yet still bright outside.
Except for Yun Tao, who is still killing rats, all the other ability users dig crystal cores out of the rats to supply Luo Feifan and Zhan Lian.
“Auntie!” Hengheng ’s voice calls from inside the ward. An Ran hurries back inside. A rat, as big as a cat, with two scarlet eyes, bites the screen outside the window.
The rat is clearly evolved but different from zombies. Zombies are covered in sores, but the rats have intact fur and show all five senses.
“Don’t be afraid. I’m here.” An Ran doesn’t call for help. She steps forward to the window. Taking a flower seed out of her pocket, she places it in her palm to germinate. Tender green leaves instantly climb the window, grow through the mouse-bitten screen, and reach into the rat’s mouth.
The rat squeaks and falls from the windowsill, carrying An Ran’s plants with it, into the circle of rats below the window.
The flower seeds come from a small agricultural store on the national road to Tiesi Village. She keeps them in her pocket—unnoticeable and ready for use anytime.
An Ran opens the window. In the dim light, she sees a patch of red eyes and hears the squeaking of rats under the windowsill. They seem to notice An Ran’s head sticking out and rush excitedly to the top of the wall, one after another, as if ready to climb.
An Ran hurriedly scatters another handful of flower seeds, urging the plants to “eat” the rats. Her plants grow quickly, and the seeds she chooses come from vines with winding stems, perfect for entangling the dense masses of rats.
After a while, the number of rats at the foot of the wall decreases, and green vines grow up along the wall.
But rats aren’t zombies. These mutant rats are even more powerful than ordinary rats because they eat everything! Besides eating people, they also eat plants!
An Ran’s vines face a tougher defense. Sweating all over, she takes out all the crystal cores on her body. After a moment’s thought, she turns and grabs the bag of crystal cores at the foot of Doll’s bed. She takes a handful, leans against the bed, and while absorbing the crystal cores, she swallows and expels the energy within her body.
Invisible to others, she alone defends the rear of the entire hospital.
