Chapter 338: Who Says We Won’t Perform the Surgery?
An Ran, who is sitting by the window, turns her head with a cold sneer. Holding Doll, she walks up to Zhou Xiang, bypassing Zhan Lian, and stands right in front of him. Her voice is sharp as she says:
“Go back and tell Lei Jiang that we’re not going to do the surgery. Tell him to just keep Dr. Zhao and take good care of him. Make sure he doesn’t let Tang Jianjun find out.”
Looking at Zhao Qianrong, who is 70 years old but still valued by Tang Jianjun, it is clear just how much Tang Jianjun relies on Dr. Zhao. She is still practicing at the small clinic in Tiesi Village, a clear sign of her importance.
And Lei Jiang trapping Dr. Zhao and the doctor recommended by him? It is obvious that this is all part of his plan to manipulate Zhan Lian and An Ran.
Why go through all that trouble? An Ran thinks. At most, she won’t let Little Mint undergo the surgery. After all, Little Mint’s body isn’t suitable for an abortion anyway.
Zhou Xiang pauses for a moment, then studies An Ran closely. He nods and says, "Aha," before turning around and quickly running out of the IV drip area, a layer of sweat on his forehead and back.
The phrase "In wartime, don’t kill the messenger" doesn’t seem to apply in this modern context. If Zhou Xiang hadn’t brought up Dr. Zhao today, Zhan Lian would have killed him in an instant.
Zhou Xiang had thought that when he was sent by Lei Jiang, this negotiation would go smoothly, especially since a strong alliance would benefit both sides in the apocalypse. He hadn’t expected that Zhan Lian’s aura would be so intimidating. What level is Zhan Lian’s ability? He has no idea.
If Lei Jiang doesn’t deal with Zhan Lian, he will never get An Ran.
It is already late at night, and Zhou Xiang’s proposal has left An Ran in a foul mood. She doesn’t feel like talking anymore and decides to take Little Mint and Doll to bed.
The county’s maternity and child health clinic has three rooms, each with three beds. An Ran is in the process of laying fresh sheets on one of the beds. Little Mint, holding Doll, stands beside her.
As An Ran hears men’s voices coming from outside the door, she quickly finishes making the bed, takes Doll from Little Mint, and lays him down. She tells Little Mint: “You sleep first. Watch your sister.”
She then opens the door and steps outside. Following the hallway, she reaches the room with the flickering candlelight. When she peeks inside, she sees Zhan Lian standing on a ladder, fixing a lightbulb on the ceiling, while Luo Feifan stands beneath him, holding a flashlight to help.
When Zhan Lian notices An Ran standing by the dark doorway, he twists the lightbulb into place, then looks down at the faint light by the door and asks:
“What’s up?”
“Is the lightbulb broken?” An Ran furrows her brow, looking up at Zhan Lian. The room is pitch black, with only the faint light of the flashlight moving. “Didn’t we say no surgery? Why are you fixing lightbulbs?”
“Who said we’re not doing the surgery?” Zhan Lian tightens the lightbulb, jumps off the ladder, and walks up to An Ran. “You go rest. Tomorrow morning, you’ll see Dr. Zhao. Tonight, we’re going to get Dr. Zhao back.”
He has made up his mind—he is going to solve this with force.
An Ran doesn’t respond, her eyes fixed on Zhan Lian. Even though the room is dark, her eyes seem to shine brighter.
She doesn’t understand why Zhan Lian has taken things this far, even to the point of resorting to force to keep the promise he made to her. She doesn’t know what to say to him, so she simply watches him, studying the outline of his figure in the dark, saying nothing.
