Chapter 308: A Lot of Work to Be Done
An Ran stands at the end of the corridor and glances at the situation inside. She smells the scent of disinfectant.
Holding Doll in one arm, she reaches back with her free hand to take Little Mint's hand and follows the military doctor up the stairs.
The air inside the clinic is stifling, but neither An Ran nor Doll seems bothered. An Ran has carried Doll out of a hospital swarming with zombies, so she isn’t fazed by this place. It is Little Mint who is struggling. Her young face is pale as paper, and the moment she catches a whiff of the disinfectant, she bends over and vomits.
"Come on, this way."
After she finishes vomiting, An Ran puts her arm around Little Mint's thin body, firmly grasps her shoulders, and with a determined look, leads her up to the third floor.
The third floor is the laboratory. The environment is basic, with the old tube-shaped building style of a village clinic. A small cement guardrail, unpainted, faces the backyard.
There is a heavy smell of disinfectant and blood in the air. There are very few people around. From one of the rooms comes the sound of someone talking and crying. Perhaps because it isn't exposed to the sun, the temperature here is a few degrees lower than downstairs.
The military doctor brought An Ran, Little Mint, and Doll to a wooden door and knocked on it.
A kind old man's voice came from inside. "Come in."
The military doctor brings An Ran, Little Mint, and Doll to a wooden door and knocks on it.
A kind old man's voice comes from inside. "Come in."
The military doctor pushes the door open, salutes the old man sitting inside, then turns around and says to An Ran, who is standing outside the door, "Sister-in-law, this is Doctor Zhao. I’ll be waiting outside."
"Okay, thanks." An Ran nods to the military doctor and pulls Little Mint into the room.
She looks around and finds the room very crowded. An old woman with gray hair and glasses, very thin and wearing a white coat, is sitting behind a table. She is holding a pen, with a prescription book spread out on the table. Behind her is a blue curtain, and behind that is a bed for examining women's private parts.
She looks like an old doctor and exudes a sense of authority.
The elderly doctor exudes a sense of authority, despite her age. She adjusts her glasses and, after a quick glance at An Ran, nods. With a solemn expression, she asks, "Are you with Captain Zhan’s team? What’s the issue?"
An Ran smiles politely at the old doctor, then pushes the numb and silent Little Mint forward and says, "Hello, doctor. This is my little sister. Something happened to her during the apocalypse. I want to bring her here for a checkup to confirm."
The elderly doctor, a renowned obstetrician before the apocalypse, listens to An Ran's few words and roughly understands what An Ran wants to confirm. She nods, lowers her eyes, and seriously writes a few words on the prescription on the table, "Early pregnancy?" Then she asks, "What are the symptoms?"
"A little vomiting, just like when I was pregnant, I vomited a lot."
Little Mint doesn’t answer. An Ran answers for her.
The elderly doctor frowns and says, "Just vomiting alone can't confirm whether she's pregnant. We'll do a simple test first."
It is the end of the world, after all. Before the apocalypse, a blood test or a B-ultrasound could confirm a pregnancy easily, but now, in this ruined Tiesi Village, there is no equipment to check blood hormones — not even a pregnancy test strip.
