Chapter 243: Friends on the Second Floor
Chapter 243: Friends on the Second Floor
Not only have all of Lei Jiang's people died, but the so-called mobile granary Zeng Fan mentioned is nowhere to be found. In the mall, there are only scattered bones and that strange man-eating plant. Where is the mobile granary?
Lei Jiang’s face darkens from the wasted trip — so many days spent, so many people lost — all for nothing. He curses Zeng Fan in his heart the entire way back. If Zeng Fan were still alive, Lei Jiang would cut him to pieces.
On his way back to his base camp in the park, Lei Jiang notices something unusual. Under the moonlight, this particular street has fewer zombies than the others. In fact, it’s oddly clean. Even stranger, the area near the motel is covered in green plants. Not only do they spread across the ground, but they also climb the motel walls.
Curious and slightly excited, Lei Jiang feels something is off. The plants here are noticeably lusher than those on the surrounding roads. It’s hard not to take notice. Could what Zeng Fan said be true? Could there really be a mobile granary capable of producing fruits and vegetables?
Otherwise, where have these unusually vibrant plants come from?
He parks his car in front of the motel, opens the door, and steps out.
On the second floor, Anran spots a large group of zombies trailing behind Lei Jiang’s car. She instinctively reaches out, ready to manipulate the plants and wipe out the horde — but she hesitates and holds back.
She glances at Yun Tao beside her, who nods in agreement with her decision.
People must conceal their strengths — a truth in the world before the apocalypse and an even more vital one now. Back at the gas station, revealing her power had been a desperate move. If not for that, the Green Dragon tattooed man's men wouldn’t have pursued them so relentlessly. Without that chase, Anran wouldn’t have ended up trapped in the zombie horde, and so much could have been avoided.
Especially considering Anran’s ability — if she could actually produce fruits and vegetables, that would be one thing. At least she'd have value as a bargaining chip if captured. But she can’t. Her power only allows her to manipulate plants — plants that can devour zombies and rats.
If word of her ability spreads, the best outcome would be exploitation by some faction. The worst? She’d be captured and dissected in a lab.
Besides, the man who parks in front of the motel doesn’t seem like someone who can’t handle a few pursuers. In this world, anyone surviving alone isn’t ordinary.
Sure enough, after stepping out of the car, the man grabs a knife from inside, turns around, and skillfully dispatches some of the zombies that have been chasing him. Afterward, he walks over the harmless green plants and enters the motel.
Anran and Yun Tao remain by the window, watching intently.
Meanwhile, Little Mint quietly takes Hengheng into the room, closes the door tightly, and makes no sound. Doll on Anran’s bed stirs, kicking her legs and letting out a soft whimper.
Anran squeezes her eyes shut.
Great. Now that Doll has started crying, pretending the motel is empty is no longer an option.
Sure enough, Lei Jiang, now standing among the tables and chairs on the first floor, raises his voice. His tone carries a faint hint of politeness:
"Friends on the second floor, there’s no need to hide. My name is Lei Jiang. I came here alone. Surviving in times like these isn’t easy. Are you interested in coming down and making friends?"
