Chapter 242: Too Despicable
Chapter 242: Too Despicable
Not letting go and being too persistent are obstacles to the path ahead. This is the end of the world — who hasn't experienced the destruction of their family or the separation from their spouse and children? Why cling to the past?
But just as he is about to turn away, Yun Tao sees Hengheng standing quietly on the steps between the first and second floors. He isn’t sure if Hengheng has overheard their conversation or not.
Anran notices Hengheng too. She opens her mouth to speak, but before she can say anything, Hengheng walks down the stairs. The little child, with a heartbreaking sense of maturity, points at Liu Yuan's crystal core and asks Anran carefully:
"Can I have it, Auntie?"
His childish voice, filled with such a pleading tone, makes Anran's heart ache. She takes Liu Yuan's crystal core, places it in Hengheng's small hand, and lets him hold it tightly. Then Little Mint runs down from the second floor, picks up Hengheng, and takes him back upstairs to sleep.
"If you do this, he'll never let go of it," Yun Tao says, looking at Anran with some disapproval. Yet, he can’t bring himself to scold her too harshly. Compared to Anran, Yun Tao is a man and nearly twice her age. What is clear to him might not be as clear to her.
Anran purses her lips, hugs Doll in her arms, and remains silent. Yun Tao sighs and says, "I saw people fighting near the survivor park today."
"Ah? Why?" Anran asks, puzzled.
"Probably something unpleasant," Yun Tao replies without much interest. "There was a man — probably one of those guys from the gas station — who drove your car to the park. After exchanging a few words, he fought his way right in."
Yun Tao isn’t particularly interested in the conflicts between survivor groups, but he notices the man who drives Anran's car. From the way he moves, Yun Tao suspects the man is a soldier. His skill in breaking into the park with ease suggests he isn’t just any ordinary soldier.
Yun Tao's curiosity is piqued, but since the man is driving Anran's car, he assumes the man has ties to the Green Dragon tattooed man's group. He immediately categorizes him as an enemy — one that won’t be easy to deal with.
"Survivors aren't easy to get along with these days," Yun Tao mutters. "There's no law or order anymore. They kill without hesitation and start fights over nothing. It's disgusting."
Anran has no idea who the man driving her ex-husband's car is, but after hearing Yun Tao's words, she immediately despises him. Earlier that day, her car had passed right by her. Fortunately, she hadn’t gone out to stop it — otherwise, she might have been the one getting beaten.
In the dim candlelight, the sound of a car echoes in the distance. Anran and Yun Tao exchange glances, and Yun Tao quickly blows out the candle on the table.
Anran cradles the sleeping baby in one arm, grabs the package of crystal cores from the table with the other, and scoops up Yun Tao's wife's crystal cores as well. Then she hurries upstairs to the second floor.
A car comes careening down the street, swerving wildly and drawing a horde of zombies in its wake. It speeds straight to the end of the street, turns a corner, and stops in front of the motel.
Lei Jiang stumbles out of the car, his heart pounding. This time, he has brought over twenty power-wielding superhumans — all of whom he's rescued from various corners of Xiangcheng during these apocalyptic days.
But they are all dead.
