Chapter 237: There Is Nothing Wrong with Humans Living Together
Anran opens the door, her hair disheveled, her eyes still hazy with sleep. Yun Tao stands outside, telling her to come downstairs in a bit. She nods, then turns back inside, heading to the bathroom to quickly comb her tangled hair.
Glancing at Doll still sleeping soundly on the bed, Anran hesitates for a moment before reaching out to a nearby ivy vine. She gently pulls a branch closer and whispers, "Watch my daughter. Call me when she wakes up."
The ivy’s leaves tremble in response, as if acknowledging her words. Anran smiles, reassured, then stands up, shuts the door tightly behind her, and goes downstairs.
The first floor has the atmosphere of a bar or café. A large wooden counter stretches across one side of the room, while dusty tables and chairs sit scattered around.
At one of those tables, Yun Tao is spreading out a map, studying the route carefully. When he sees Anran coming down, he glances at her, then points to a specific spot on the map.
"This is the highway heading north," he says. "The reason we managed to escape yesterday was because I suspected there was a group of survivors nearby. So, last night, I went to check. The zombies were moving toward a park in that direction—there should be people there."
"Are we going to join those survivors?" Anran asks, pulling out a chair by the window and sitting down in a daze.
The golden morning light filters through the window, casting a warm glow over her dust-streaked face. For a moment, it makes her features seem unexpectedly soft—but the slight furrow of her brows reveals her unease.
To be honest, Anran doesn’t want to join another survivor group.
Maybe it’s because she has grown stronger, her abilities now allowing her to survive on her own with just a few children. She no longer feels the need to rely on others like before.
Or maybe… it’s because the survivors she has met in the past have left a terrible impression on her.
Wang Xin. Green Dragon tattooed man. Every so-called survivor camp she has encountered treats women like playthings, trampling on them without a second thought.
She doesn’t want to be trampled.
She doesn’t want to be treated as a "mobile granary," either.
So if Yun Tao is planning to go to those survivors, Anran has already made up her mind—this is where they will part ways.
But to her surprise, Yun Tao shakes his head. He taps a finger on the map, then gestures for her to follow him outside.
Anran hesitates but eventually gets up and goes with him.
Outside the motel, Yun Tao leads her to the JEEP parked nearby. Without a word, he opens the door and starts the engine.
As the vehicle rumbles to life, the radio flickers on. A faint, crackling voice fills the air—
"Dear survivors who have suffered, this is the Hubei Radio Station… This is the Hubei Radio Station… Survivors who are lost and don’t know where to go, please come to Hubei… Come to Hubei…"
The broadcast is weak, full of static and interference. The girl speaking on the other end sounds young and inexperienced, as if she has just scribbled down a script and started reading.
But still—Even in a world like this, a functioning radio station means something.
Whoever is behind it must have real power. Unlike the chaotic mobs led by people like Wang Xin and Green Dragon tattooed man, a structured group with access to radio waves has to have some level of order.
With order, there are rules.
And when there are rules, people can’t just act on their worst impulses out in the open.
Anran stands by the car, listening to the crackling transmission. After a moment, she turns to Yun Tao and asks, "You want to take us to northern Hubei?"
Yun Tao remains seated in the driver’s seat, looking at her steadily.
"I think it’s right for humans to live together," he says. His voice is calm but firm. "You have to understand, humans are social creatures. We used to live in a lawful society. You might think you can survive alone, without relying on other people—but what about your next generation?"
