Chapter 18: For the Sake of Our Children
Chapter 18: For the Sake of Our Children
“What a joke! Right now, we need to find a way to wait for rescue, do you understand?”
Bed 18 sits up from the bed. Though she has given birth naturally, she seems to have more energy than Anran. Since she has some grievances against Anran, Chen Jiao from bed 18 takes every opportunity to criticize her.
“In this situation, with so many monsters or zombies outside? How can we get out?”
“Zombies?”
Lying between Anran and Chen Jiao, Hu Zhen from Bed 17 thoughtfully chews over the words. Because of her cesarean section, she has been bedridden and can’t see what the monsters outside look like. Chen Jiao says they are zombies—so do they look like the ones from the movies?
Enraged, Anran sits up from her bed. She doesn’t know where the sudden strength comes from, but her incision pulls, and she feels blood rushing. She doesn’t care. She growls directly at Chen Jiao:
“Rescue? If rescue were coming, it would have arrived by now. You can wait for it slowly if you want. I’m going out. I need to send out what’s happening here and find someone to save my daughter.”
Anran then turns to Hu Zhen and says, “Given the current situation, with the phone signal gone and no way to send messages, I think the whole hospital is in trouble. The first floor has the outpatient and emergency departments and the infusion room, so there are the most people there. The second floor is the maternal and child health department, so there are also quite a few people. The third floor is the prenatal care department, the fourth floor is obstetrics, the fifth floor is the newborn department, the sixth floor is pediatrics, and the seventh floor is gynecology. I just climbed to the fifth floor’s newborn department and found even more people than in obstetrics.”
“You still have the mind to go to the neonatal department now?”
Chen Jiao looks at Anran sharply, thinking this person is truly odd. At a time like this, she still has the nerve to wander around, even just after giving birth, walking past those zombies and climbing to the neonatal department?
“Our children are still in the newborn department,” Hu Zhen answers Chen Jiao for Anran.
She feels that Anran, as a mother, going to check on the newborn department in this situation is understandable. What’s hard to understand is Chen Jiao’s reaction. After all, these children are their own flesh and blood. In such a situation, how can a mother not want to check on her children?
Chen Jiao sneers and scolds, “Anyway, I’m not in the mood to worry about my son right now. That son was forced on me by my mother-in-law. It was so painful I thought I was going to die. She said I just had to give birth and she would take care of him, but now? I don’t even know where my mother-in-law is.”
“If I were your mother-in-law and zombies came, I’d definitely leave you behind and run!” Anran, who has lay back on the bed, says to Chen Jiao. She then turns onto her side, facing away from Chen Jiao.
The saying goes, “One cannot make plans with those who are not of the same mind.” Though both she and Chen Jiao are mothers, their attitudes toward their children are entirely different. What is there to discuss?
“Alright, alright, stop arguing and don’t fight among yourselves.” Hu Zhen, in the middle, takes on the role of peacemaker. “The situation outside is complicated. It seems that in the entire obstetrics department, we are the only three living people left. We need to stick together, not just for ourselves but for our children too.”
