Chapter 17: We Need to Find a Way Out
“Ah, ah, ah!!!” Chen Jiao stands by the door, continuing to scream wildly.
Behind her, the bathroom door suddenly bursts open, and Anran rushes out. She grabs Chen Jiao’s clothes from behind and drags her into the hospital room, then quickly shuts and locks the door!
“Ah, ah, ah, there are monsters, there are monsters, ah, ah, ah!!”
"Stop screaming!!!"
Anran raises her hand and shoves Chen Jiao roughly. Outside the door, the zombies bang on it, while Chen Jiao inside continues to scream wildly. Anran slaps Chen Jiao hard to snap her out of her panic, then grips Chen Jiao’s shoulders tightly, her face stern, and scolds in a low voice:
“I told you already that there are people outside eating others, but you wouldn’t believe it. They seem to track their prey by sound. Stop screaming!”
"I-I!!" Chen Jiao is so scared that she can’t speak. Then, as if suddenly realizing something, she shakes off Anran’s hands from her shoulders and whispers reproachfully, “Why didn’t you make it clear? It’s all your fault. If you had explained it properly, would I have gone out?”
“Didn’t I say so?”
Anran is so enraged by Chen Jiao’s words that she almost has a heart attack. She bends slightly, holding her stomach, and walks back to the restroom to return the phone from bed 17. Then, she walks back to her own bed and, with a hint of sarcasm, looks back at bed 18 and says:
“Fine, you can pretend I didn’t say anything. I’ve figured it out; we’re not on the same wavelength!”
Not on the same wavelength. Anran swears that from now on, no matter what information comes up, she will never speak to bed 18 again. Look at that attitude of bed 18, full of complaints. Doesn’t she realize that when she was shouting just now, Anran pulled her back in time, preventing the zombies outside from getting her?
Such a spoiled girl, who always shifts all the responsibility onto others when something happens. She and Anran are not on the same wavelength; they can’t form a team, can’t trust each other, and are not partners!
After mentally categorizing bed 18 as someone she can’t befriend or trust, Anran feels exhausted and lies back down on her bed, starting to think about what to do next. Bed 18, however, continues to complain in her mind that Anran didn’t stop her from going out and scared her with the zombies outside. Seeing that Anran is ignoring her, she just lies back down on her bed.
Chen Jiao, sulking, also ignores Anran and goes back to her own bed, taking out her phone to call her husband and everyone in her phonebook, seeking help.
Without exception, a phone with no signal bars cannot make calls.
Hu Zhen, from bed 17, seems to be a peacemaker by nature. She looks at bed 18, then at Anran lying behind the curtain, and despite the pain from the wound on her abdomen, she slightly turns and begins dialing on her phone.
Again, without exception, a phone with no signal bars cannot make calls.
It feels as if the entire world has been reduced to just the three women in this ward. Everywhere else is shrouded in darkness, an endless expanse of darkness, except for the light still on in this ward.
"Um, Anran, do you have any ideas now?” Hu Zhen, looking worried, finally can’t hold back and asks.
The curtain beside Anran's bed is slightly opened, revealing Anran's dirty face. She rests her head on the pillow, tilts her head, and stares at the incandescent light on the ceiling. After a long silence, she finally replies to Hu Zhen:
“We need to find a way to get out.”
