Chapter 148: Like a Chicken Blood Injection
Chapter 148: Like a Chicken Blood Injection
To avoid any misunderstandings—like others thinking she might be turning into a zombie—Anran reluctantly pulls down her rolled-up sleeves, enduring the stuffiness, and steps out of the rain shelter.
Outside, Yun Tao has killed a lot of zombies but has since returned to eat lunch. Liu Yuan and Hengheng are with him, and the three of them look like a family. Yun Tao goes back to the security room to eat every day around noon.
Anran quietly bends down and begins collecting the crystal cores scattered on the ground. After a while, the five survivors, their faces covered in dust, arrive and start moving the zombie bodies.
None of them speak, each carrying a solemn expression. Anran stands there with her knife, watching. She notices Xiao Mei's husband pinching his nose as he moves the bodies and opens her mouth to call out to him. But she quickly closes it, unsure of what she could say. What could she possibly say to a man who sacrificed his wife and let her be treated poorly by other men?
The five survivors continue dragging the zombie bodies, piling them onto a cleaner’s garbage truck. One of them then pushes a cart and leaves. Anran watches them go, heading toward what seems to be the community's usual garbage pile.
Before the apocalypse, a large garbage truck would come to collect the trash every day. Now, however, no one comes, and the garbage dump has likely become a mountain of zombie corpses.
Anran stands there, deep in thought. If this killing continues, won’t the community soon become a zombie cemetery? What will they do then?
Just as the thought crosses her mind, Yun Tao returns after lunch. He glances at Anran without saying a word, walks closer, and strips off his special service uniform. Wearing only a long-sleeved T-shirt under the sun, he opens the gate and begins releasing zombies into the community.
Then it’s back to the usual routine: Yun Tao kills, kills, kills; Anran keeps collecting crystal cores, picking off zombies, and feeding Doll. The two stay busy until midnight, when Yun Tao finally stops.
Before leaving, he glances at Anran and says, “Come to the security room tomorrow morning.”
Anran nods and smiles without thinking. She has been waiting for that sentence. Today, she realizes that Yun Tao probably calls her to the security room every morning just to beat her up. But that’s fine. No matter his twisted reasons, this is an opportunity for her—an opportunity to get her revenge! Even though the chances of success are slim, as long as she gets the chance, she will one day beat Yun Tao half to death!
The next morning, Anran wakes up early, full of energy like someone injected with chicken blood. To keep Doll from making too much noise, she rummages through the house for a few black-and-white pictures, pokes small holes in them, strings them together with thread, and hangs them above the stroller.
When she was in the final month of her pregnancy, Liu Yuan and the others told her that black-and-white images are easier for a one- or two-month-old baby to focus on, so Anran prepared a set of black-and-white cards long ago.
But with the world ending and her having just given birth, she forgot about them. If it hadn’t been for Doll staring at the black-and-white cards in the stroller yesterday, Anran would’ve completely overlooked them.
