Chapter 132: Xiaomei's Madness
Chapter 132: Xiaomei's Madness
As Liu Yuan and Hengheng approach the security room downstairs, they run into Xiaomei heading toward the gate. Xiaomei’s face is cold, and she passes by them without even sparing a glance. Liu Yuan recalls Anran's warning and calls out to her.
“Xiaomei, wait! Are you going out? There are zombies outside.”
Before Liu Yuan can finish, Xiaomei, dressed in a black windbreaker, spins around. A fierce glare flashes in her eyes, and a madness, unhinged and inexplicable, is evident as she sneers.
“Mind your security guard and your son. I hope your son can live forever!”
Liu Yuan’s temper flares. The concern that had been on her face for Xiaomei freezes, replaced by a coldness as she replies sharply, “What are you saying? Why curse my son for no reason?”
She had only wanted to check on Xiaomei. After all, Anran had said that Xiaomei came to her. Liu Yuan had hoped Xiaomei’s insanity was resolved, but now it’s clear she’s still unwell, and worse, she’s cursed Hengheng. Liu Yuan can’t hold back her anger.
Xiaomei, meanwhile, has already walked far away. She’s thin, her posture somehow both sad and angry. Liu Yuan can’t help but think of Xiaomei’s daughter, who was the same age as Hengheng, went to the same kindergarten, and had better physical fitness. Xiaomei’s daughter rarely fell ill, yet she turned into a zombie, while Hengheng hasn’t.
The source of Xiaomei's madness is clear: it’s Hengheng. She started to lose control after seeing him. Before, it had been her grief over her daughter’s transformation, but now it’s twisted into hatred, and she vents it on everyone, even Yun Tao.
Liu Yuan feels the weight of Xiaomei’s words like a blow. Her mood sours as she watches Xiaomei’s figure disappear at the end of the green path. With a deep breath, Liu Yuan grabs Hengheng’s hand and pulls him toward the security room, her face set in a grim expression. She has decided to ignore Xiaomei from now on—whatever happens to her is no longer her concern. Whether Xiaomei leaves the community or encounters zombies outside doesn’t matter. Liu Yuan is too angry to care.
Meanwhile, Anran has already made plans with Doll to go out for some sun. Doll, of course, has no objections—she doesn’t understand anything Anran is saying, but she’s content.
Anran places Doll in the crib and goes to retrieve Doll sling from the luggage. Since moving back, she hasn’t had a chance to unpack, and the luggage has been piling up in the master bedroom.
Anran, still in the same yoga clothes she’s worn since her return, hasn’t bothered to change. While they might be a little dirty and carry a faint sour smell, Anran doesn’t mind. After all, in the post-apocalypse, who doesn’t have a little sourness? She decides not to bother changing and instead grabs Doll sling from her backpack, quickly tying it on.
She then checks Doll’s diapers. There are still a few packs left, but given how quickly Doll goes through them, she knows they won’t last more than ten days.
Anran thinks about the maternity and baby stores just outside the street, some of which haven’t been raided by Wang Xin and his group. She considers grabbing a few more packs of diapers and maybe even finding some clean water. Doll needs to be wiped down from time to time, especially since children at this age grow so quickly, and skin accumulates dead cells, especially in places like the armpits. Without regular cleaning, it can get too dirty.
